Dragon Ash (ドラゴンアッシュ, Doragon Asshu) is a Japanese rap rock group founded in 1996 by Kenji "KJ" Furuya and Sakurai Makoto.[1] They were one of the first groups to popularize hip hop in Japan. They brought a western flavor to Japanese music and helped to turn rap music mainstream,[citation needed] with a mixture of reggae, hip hop, metal, punk, drum 'n' bass, rhythm 'n' blues and Latin music influences. Some of their best known songs include "Shizuka na Hibi no Kaidan o", "Grateful Days", "Life Goes On", and "I Love Hip Hop".[citation needed] Kenji has stated in several interviews[citation needed] that the reason Dragon Ash started out as a pseudo-punk band was because, at the time, punk was popular in Japan, and his handlers felt that the hip hop image would not sell. He has also noted that hip hop has always been first in his book (although has great passion for rock music), but he did what was necessary to become successful in the industry. Dragon Ash is a member of Mob Squad, which is an affiliation with the bands Source and Endive. Dragon Ash also has the French fleur-de-lis as their band logo/symbol, and have several songs with lily imaginary. Dragon Ash are known for their slogan 'Free Your Mind', this is where they utilize their open-minded approach with their adaptability with incorporating music genres to their forte of musical creativity. Additionally, Dragon Ash are also known for their slogan 'No Music, No Life', with their creativity & dedication for the importance of music first and foremost, before the fame and money of the music industry.

Kenji Furuya (leader of Dragon Ash), has expressed his music terminology 'No Music, No Life' most effectively, with Dragon Ash producing millions of record sales from their debut, and No.1 charting singles and albums. Kenji also has displayed this creativity evolving with different music genres; first releasing raw and powerful punk rock albums during their earlier songs (between 1996-1998), gracefully progressing towards the 'hip hop/rock amalgamation' expression of sound for their 1999 album 'Viva La Revolution', selling 2 million copies; (the first half of the album with strong elements of hiphop, and the second half with powerful elements of rock music). By 2000 Dragon Ash were creating multiple chart selling hits of hiphop influenced tracks, once their 2001 album was released 'Lily of da Valley', their powerful fusion of rock & hip-hop was finally ready for Dragon Ash fans to embrace, as this album sold 1 million copies in Japan.

History

Dragon Ash started out from humble punk beginnings to become one of the brightest groups in the growing New Japanese Rock movement in the late 1990s, blending pop sensibilities with a hard-edged sound, producing albums and singles that play like a tour of Western rock of the 1990s.

Lead singer and guitarist Kenji Furuya, son of actor Ikko Furuya, met drummer Makoto Sakurai when they were junior high students in a Tokyo suburb, and the two started playing together. Though temporarily sidetracked into following in his father's footsteps, Furuya gave up the few acting gigs that he was getting on TV dramas to concentrate on music in high school.

In 1996, knowing what they wanted but needing some sort of mentor, they took on bass player Ikuzo Baba, ten years their senior. Furuya and Sakurai had the talent and drive – Baba brought experience and a wealth of musical knowledge. Dragon Ash was born.

The group debuted in 1997 with two EPs at the beginning of the year, "The Day Dragged On" and "Public Garden", which showed their raw, punk hardcore style, influenced by another rock trio, Nirvana. By the end of the year and time of their release, Mustang!, the group had progressed from their simple punk roots to a blend of pop, funk, hardcore, rap, and metal.

Through 1998 their popularity increased, and by the time of Buzz Songs, their sound had solidified to rock/rap, helped with the mixing skills of DJ Bots, who occasionally appeared on some songs. Two singles – "Let Yourself Go, Let Myself Go" and "Grateful Days," the latter featuring hardcore rapper Zeebra and soulstress ACO – sold so well that they cracked the Japanese Oricon charts, usually reserved for pop music, and went to number one.

Dragon Ash’s first big break with their 4th single, "Let Yourself Go, Let Myself Go", which hit No. 7 on the Oricon Weekly Singles chart, and eventually climbed to No. 4, selling a total of 640,000 copies. In May they simultaneously released their fifth and sixth singles, "Grateful Days" and "I Love Hip Hop", which debuted at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. When these two singles debuted, "Let Yourself Go, Let Myself Go" had not yet dropped off the top 10 chart, giving Dragon Ash three top 10 singles at the same time.

The band finally reached the peak of their success when they released their third album, Viva la Revolution, in July and it hit No. 1 on its debut week. The album has sold in excess of 2,000,000 copies.

During 1999, Dragon Ash had become a four-piece, with DJ Bots essential to the mix. Their third album, 1999's Viva la Revolution, not only signified the arrival of the band as a major group in Japan, but was one of the first volleys in the New Japanese Rock movement. In 2000, Dragon Ash undertook the Total Music Communication Tour, touring Japan with a lineup that included other rising rock acts, such as Missile Girl Scout, Penpals, and Skebou Kings. Meanwhile, Furuya and DJ Bots formed a duo of sorts, writing and producing songs for acts such as Sugar Soul under the name Steady & Co. Likewise, Baba and Sakurai sidelined as a remixing unit called Motor Headphone, popping up on various compilations. If anyone had any doubts that the group was softening around the edges, 2001's Lily of da Valley was as hard, funky, and uncompromising as their earliest work.

The band continued to be successful through the turn of the century, collaborating with the hip hop group Rappagariya on "Deep Impact in 2000 and consistently pulling in No. 1 spots on both the singles and albums charts with their new releases. In 2003 the group expanded to include its full current roster of members, bringing in Hiroki, Atsushi, and Dri-V.[2] In 2007 they celebrated their 10th anniversary by simultaneously releasing two best-of albums, The Best of Dragon Ash with Changes Vol. 1 and The Best of Dragon Ash with Changes Vol. 2. Both albums hit No. 1 upon their debut.[3]

Kenji Furuya, the leader of Japanese rap rock group Dragon Ash, will release his first solo album Everything Becomes The Music from Victor Entertainment on June 17[year needed]. Following his solo debut song "Swallow Dive" in March of this year, acclaimed anime director Kenji Kamiyama directed a music video for "Stairway", the leading track from the album. Kamiyama is known for his directorial works for the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series (2002–2006), Eden of the East (2009), and 009 Re:Cyborg (2012). Furuya, who has been a big fan of these works, wanted Kamiyama to direct live-action MVs of his solo songs. The "Stairway" MV was filmed in Australia.

Influences

The group uses various samples, most notably from the famous American alternative rock group, The Smashing Pumpkins.[citation needed] These songs include "Cherub Rock", in which they sample the bass line from The Smashing Pumpkins song by the same name, and "Grateful Days" in which they sample the opening of "Today"; they also named the song "Siva" after the Pumpkins song. Kenji Furuya's influences include artists Tupac Shakur, Nirvana, Bob Marley, Los Lobos & Rage Against The Machine.

Side projects

Dragon Ash has gained some popularity outside Japan after the song "Shizuka na Hibi no Kaidan o" was used as the ending theme for the popular Japanese film, Battle Royale.[citation needed] Kenji Furuya has also worked on several side projects in recent years, including being the frontman of Steady & Co., a Japanese hip hop and music production group consisting of himself, Bots, Ilmari of Rip Slyme, and Shigeo of SBK (Skebo King).[citation needed] In addition to Steady & Co., Furuya has also collaborated with other Japanese hip hop artists on the Mob Squad album and subsequent label.[citation needed]

  • Kenji "KJ" Furuya (降谷建志) – lead vocals, MC, guitar, latin percussion, songwriter, composer, producer, leader (1996–present)
    • As the front-man and founding member of Dragon Ash, Kenji is also a popular model in Japan and Asia for style and fashion magazines. As a model he has also promoted brands Levis, Stussy, Adidas & Ray-ban (including appearing in a Japanese commercials for these brands). Kenji Furuya had been the spokesperson for the Sony Walkman series in the late 1990s and early 2000s (during the Walkman popularity in Japan), appearing in many commercials featuring Dragon Ash's latest music releases. Kenji's musical influences are artists such as Bob Marley, Nirvana, Spanish Guitar artists, drum and bass & original Hiphop music from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. In July 2008, Kenji married Japanese singer/actress Megumi Yamano, who he had been dating since 2005. Kenji has starred in various Japanese movies with main and cameo roles, and has also made his J-Drama debut in 2013, appeared as an actor in the NHK drama "Yae of Sakura". K.J.'s father Ikko Furuya is also a well known actor in Japan.
  • Makoto "MAKOTO" Sakurai (桜井誠) – drums, percussion, backing vocals (1996–present)
    • As the other founding member of Dragon Ash, Makoto is also a lover of cooking; he has written two popular cookbooks in Japan, popular with both fans of Dragon Ash & the Japanese cuisine fanbase. Makoto Sakurai's music inspiration generally is by punk rock and grunge bands from the 1990s. Makoto is also known for his versatility in playing the drums during live Dragon Ash concerts, such as his technique of playing fast-paced drums for Dragon Ash's drum and bass tracks (during the bands genre era for drum & bass).
  • Tetsuya "DJ BOTS" Sato (佐藤哲也) – DJ, turntables, synthesizer, sampler, producer, latin percussion, backing vocals [support member] (1998–1999), [band member] (1999–present)
    • DJ BOTS who first joined Dragon Ash as a full-time member in 1999 is a masterful turnbalism artist. As his creative turntable skills has been heard within Dragon Ash's discography during all their 'musical genre era's'. He is a fan of Hiphop music and turntablism DJ's from late 1980s to the early 1990s. Besides DJ Bot's foundation for the turntables, Bots has achieved creativity for Dragon Ash by supporting Kenji Furuya for playing Spanish/Bossa Nova drums during live performances (this is during Dragon Ash's Spanish guitar era). In 2015 DJ Bots completed a DJ mix album for Dragon Ash, titled 'dodecahedron mix "by DJ BOTS". Displaying his creativity as a DJ, this album displays perfectly blended mixes of tracks fused together, with different methods of sampling, producing & arranging tracks for a selected track list from Dragon Ash's whole discography. Additionally a new remix of a classic Dragon Ash track is also included titled 'Viva La Revolution' (Paint The Lily Remix), produced by DJ BOTS.
  • Hiroki "HIROKI" Sugiyama (杉山弘樹) – electric guitar [support member] (2000–2003), [band member] (2003–present)
    • Hiroki was first a support member for Dragon ash from 2000 until 2003. He became a full-time member in 2003 as the main guitarist, this is so Kenji Furuya has more creativity to focus as the lead vocalist/MC of the band, while both band members are able to share musical creativity involving acoustic, electric and Spanish guitar.
  • Atsushi "ATSUSHI" Takahashi (高橋アツシ) – dance choreographer, dance [support member] (2001–2003), [band member] (2003–present)
    • Atsushi already a qualified dance teacher, is responsible for choreography of all dance performances by Dragon Ash. Joined by touring with and being introduced by popular Japanese hiphop group Rip Slyme. He is known for his dynamic movement and creativity, while incorporating his own interpretation of all elements of dance such as tapdance. In 2009, he is the founder of the dance movement/project 'POWER OF LIFE'.
  • Masaki "DRI-V" Chiba (千葉雅紀) – dance [support member] (2001–2003), [band member] (2003–present)
    • Dri-V first joined Dragon Ash being introduced by Japanese Hiphop group Rip Slyme. His foundation is Breakdancin', while incorporating his own interpretation of all elements of dance such as pantomime, also was first a support member for Dragon ash from 2001 until 2003. From 2015 Masaki has started his own project & YouTube channel called 'DRI-V DANCE SCHOOL', presenting step-by-step videos for the fundamentals of breakdancing and various other forms of street dance (also as a professional dance teacher in Tokyo).

Former members

  • Ikuzo "IKÜZÖNE" Baba (馬場育三) – bass, mentor (1996–2012)
    • Ikuzone has a long-term friendship and inspiration with Japanese rock legend HIDE (X-Japan). Ikuzone's musical influences comes from Japanese metal.
    • Iküzöne died on April 21, 2012 due to acute heart failure. He was found by family members in his home studio and rushed to a central Tokyo hospital, but was pronounced dead at 22:55. A private funeral service for family was held.

Support member

  • Kensuke "KENKEN" Kaneko (金子賢輔) – bass (2011–present)
    • KenKen has been the support and live bassist for Dragon Ash since 2011. Since 2006 KenKen is also the full-time bass guitarist for J-Rock band RIZE.

Mixture Rock (Innovated Genre)

Dragon Ash are known for their dedication towards the foundation of the following genres: various styles of 'rock music' & the combination of all elements within the sound of 'hiphop'. With fans always anticipating the creativity the band creates, they have evolved with multiple genres, including the importance of their rock/hiphop foundation of sound. In their later years, Dragon Ash have progressed towards various genres including electronica, Latin music, drum & bass & reggae. Dragon Ash are known today for innovating the term 'Mixture Rock'; in Japan, the genre mixture rock is heavily known for Dragon Ash's creativity & evolving genres of music expression.
