Notes | British Pith Helmet, Foreign Service 1902 Pattern, WW1 Used on Gallipoli by 13-84 Trooper Oscar Adolphe Sutton, Auckland Mounted Rifles, NZEF The wearer, 13-84 Trooper Oscar Adolphe Sutton, North Auckland Mounted Rifles, left New Zealand with the Main Body in October 1914. He was wounded twice during his Gallipoli service, the first time on 19th June 1915, he received a gun-shot wound to his back while swimming at Anzac Cove. On the second occasion on 9th August 1915 he received a scalp wound and was deemed unfit for any further service and was invalided back to New Zealand on 23rd September 1915. About the helmet- The Foreign Service helmet was introduced in 1902 for British Army other ranks serving overseas. It was used during WW1 by New Zealanders serving on Gallipoli and in Egypt but gradually phased out. Some were issued in New Zealand, for example to members of the Maori Contingent, and may have been made locally. Other issued (on request) in Egypt were more likely to have been made in England. On Gallipoli wore three main types of headgear – slouch hats (including lemon-squeezers), service caps (sometimes worn with a sunshade protecting the neck) and pith helmets. The British foreign-service pith helmet was favoured by many of the men as it was designed for tropical conditions and provided much better protection against the sun. For this reason it speaks to the conditions endured on the peninsula and in Sinai-Palestine. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
