Summary

Description The New York City Marble Cemetery at 52-74 East 2nd Street between First and Second Avenues in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was founded in 1831, one year after the nearby New York Marble Cemetery. It was the second non-sectarian cemetery in the city. (Source: Guide to NYC Landmarks (4th ed.)) The Cemetery is open to the public three days a year: an open house day in the spring (May 1 in 2011) and a fall open house weekend (October 15 & 16 in 2011). (Source: "Events" on the New York City Marble Cemetery website) This picture was taken during the May 1, 2011 open house. It shows the burial vault of John Lloyd Stephen, a celebrated archaeologist who pioneered the study of Mayan culture, with the Mayan glyph designed by his collaborator, Frederick Catherwood, in the inset lower right.
