Summary[edit]

Terry and the Pirates strip, February 29, 1936, Milton Caniff, Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate; source: scan by User:BayBoy2.

This excerpt is being used in the Terry and the Pirates (comic strip) article to illustrate several characteristics of the strip. It is unclear whether this is still under copyright, although it was copyrighted at the time. If it is under copyright, this is fair use under US Copyright law because:

  • It is representative of the work as a whole. In particular, it shows the three main protagonists, a not-atypical situation (lost and in danger), and a very typical mysterious and beautiful woman who is interested in Pat's company (also not atypical).
  • It is only a small part of the body of work (one of 9000 strips).
  • It should not affect the commercial value of Terry & the Pirates.
  • It is used for non-commercial purposes.
