The opposite serrate leaves and twigs with urticating hairs are characteristic of Urtica. Most Montana plants are referred to Urtica dioica subsp. gracilis because both pistillate and staminate plants occur on the same stem, the stems tend to bear few hairs, and the leaf undersurfaces are not particularly hairy.
