Flipnote Studio 3D, in Japan known as Moving Notepad 3D (うごくメモ帳 3D, Ugoku Memochō Surī Dī), originally announced as Flipnote Memo,[1] is a 2013 free application for the Nintendo 3DS. This successor of Flipnote Studio allows users to use three separate layers to create stereoscopic 3D animations, which can be exported into GIF or AVI format, and features six colors compared to the previous version's three. Flipnote Studio 3D has been delayed quite a few times, upsetting some fans. The application was used to make mock-ups of upcoming Pikmin cartoon.[2][3] The Hatena-hosted online community services for the original Flipnote Studio have now officially retired on May 31, 2013.[4][5][6]

Features

Animations can be uploaded to two different Flipnote Galleries; Friends, which can be shared amongst friends, and World, a paid community service which allows users to share animations with others around the world. The latter gallery requires a monthly fee to cover server costs, though there will be a 30 day trial period available, special days when the service would be openly accessible for free even after the end of the trial period, users with consistently high ratings can potentially have this fee waived, and every day between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM daily according to the 3DS Time Settings.

The interface consists of the same tools from the original Flipnote Studio, but with some improvements. For example, because of the 3DS' 3D feature, the user can create 3D flipnotes. There are 3 layers instead of the original 2 in the DSi version. These layers help the user create 3D flipnotes, because layer 1 would be at the bottom of the 3D effect, layer 2 would be in the middle, and layer 3 would be at the top, or the "eye popping-effect" layer. There are also 6 colors, and there can be 8 by mixing. However, if you're creating a 3D flipnote, there can only be 2 colors per layer (or 3, depending on how many layers you are using). There are also "paint bucket" and "text" tools. The paint bucket will, like in many paint software applications, fill an enclosed area with color. The text tool is self-explanatory; as it lets you put actual text, instead of having to draw it.

Development

The game was announced in a travel of Miyamoto en France in 2011 with the name Flipnote Memo. In a Nintendo Direct Mini in March 13, 2013, the application received the name Flipnote Studio 3D, with a release date of Summer 2013. Originally Flipnote Studio 3D was to be released in July 3, 2013, but in a statement by Nintendo in June 27 the game was delayed for July 24.[7] In the first time the European version was to be released in August 1, 2013, but was delayed in July 30, 2013 to ensure that it provides the best results.[8][9]

Because of unexpectedly high use in Japan, the release date was delayed for Europe.
