The Forzani Group Ltd. is a Calgary, Alberta based national sporting goods retailer in Canada. It operates under five corporate banners: Sport Chek, Atmosphere (renamed from Coast Mountain Sports), Sport Mart, National Sports and Athletes World. It also franchises under Sports Experts, Intersport, Tech Shop, Atmosphere, RnR, Hockey Experts, Nevada Bob’s Golf, "The Fitness Source", Pegasus, S3, and Econosports.
With revenues of over a billion Canadian dollars a year, Forzani Group Ltd. (FGL) accounts for 16.4% of the Canadian sporting goods retailing market, which in 2003 was worth CDN$6.753 billion. FGL competes on a regional basis with independent retailers and regional chains, and on the national level with Mountain Equipment Co-op, Canadian Tire, Hudson's Bay Company, Wal-Mart and Sears. Forzani has 551 stores shared between its corporate and franchise banners. Its threats include seasonality, foreign competition, debt levels and consistent brand imaging.
In May 2011, Canadian Tire announced a friendly takeover bid for Forzani Group, with a $771 million all-cash offer.[2] However, some media outlets have speculated that the company may be subject to a bidding war.[3]
