The Greek women’s Basketball League is the most important competition of Greek women’s Basketball. It is organised by EOK (Hellenic Basketball Federation). It began with the season 1967-68. The first championship in the season 1967-68 was organised by ΕΟΑΠ (Greek:Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Αθλοπαιδιών). Two years later EOK assumed the competition.[1]

Iraklis Thessaloniki won the first championship, in season 1967-68. From 1976 to 1999, Sporting dominated in competition, winning 20 championships in this period (another championship won in 2004). So far, Sporting had won the most championships (21 totally).[2] From 2008 to 2012 Athinaikos dominated exclusively, breaking the record of consecutive wins in Greek league. The success of Athinaikos entered the Guinness book of record.[3][4] The serie of Athinaikos stopped to105 wins.[5] The current champion is Elliniko B.C. who won the last championship.

History[edit]

The competition of Women's Basketball League started in 1968. In 1984-85 season the competition renamed to A Ethniki and in 1997-98 season it renamed to A1 Ethniki. Simultaneously the second division was created under the name A2 Ethniki.[6] Since 2010 the organisers of championship decided to take place play off rounds.[7]
