Illinois Central College, often called ICC, is a large Illinois community college with its main campus in northern East Peoria, Illinois. Its district, Illinois Community College District 514, is a 2,322-square-mile (6,010 km2) area across most of 4 counties and parts of 6 others.[1]

As of Fall of 2007, ICC had an enrollment of 11,804 students, with a full-time equivalency of 6,829 students, and served 20,152 individual students across the entire fiscal year. 91.3% of students were in-district residents.[1]

Academic facilities

As of 2007, ICC offers 45672 transferable Associate in Arts & Sciences programs, 85 Associate in Applied Science programs, and 95 occupational certificate programs. There are approximately 3000 classes offered each semester, and the average class size is 13.[1] Its educational accreditation is from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools,[1] which accredits most of the colleges and universities in the western United states.

The Peoria Downtown Library has an impressive collection of health care-related media. The reference collection at the East Peoria Learning Resource Center (the library) is a relatively good one.

The East Peoria Campus has the Performing Arts Center, the David R. Leitch Career and Counseling Center, a small health office, and the Cafe Breve and the cafeteria.

ICC has three major sites:

  • Main campus at 1 College Drive in East Peoria
  • Downtown campus, consisting of the Perley and Thomas buildings on Adams Street in Peoria
  • ICC North campus, at 5407 North University, also in Peoria

The main campus has a branch of the University of Illinois at Springfield[2] that allows students to take junior and senior level university classes while still using the ICC campus. The library faculty at the East Peoria campus run an associate degree program for future library technical assistants. This program has an agreement with the University of Maine at Augusta that makes it possible to quickly complete both the two-year degree and an online baccalaureate degree for those wishing to get a senior posting or go on to graduate school.

A fourth site is under construction in Pekin, Illinois for courses in welding, machining, HVAC, refrigeration, and green energy.[3]

Campus life

ICC has over 40 official student clubs and organizations.[4] Academic clubs include the QUEST program for transfer students, and 4 honor societies: Sigma Kappa Delta, Lambda Beta, Phi Rho Pi, and Phi Theta Kappa.[5][6]

The Harbinger is the student newspaper and is distributed six times per year at no charge. Newspaper work can be arranged as academic credit or as an extra-cirricular activity. The ICC ARTS Journal, featuring student writing and artwork, is published annually.[7]

There is an apartment complex, named Woodview Commons, on the ICC campus. The property is owned by a limited liability company subsidiary of the Illinois Central College Educational Foundation, and managed by the Texas company Century Campus Housing Management Corporation.[8]

Sports

ICC is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and participates in intercollegiate NJCAA basketball (Division II), cross country (I), soccer (I), men's baseball (II), men's golf (II), women's fast-pitch softball (II), and women's volleyball (II).[9][10] Intercollegiate participation is only open to full-time students with a 2.0 grade point average.[9]

Intramural sports include basketball, bowling, flag football, tennis, and volleyball.[11] In 2008, an intramural "card series" was established with spades, euchre, and Uno tournaments.[12]

Chamionship teams

The six-time national champion women's basketball program is well known. Lorene Ramsey's 33 years coaching the team brought them 887 wins to 197 losses (.818), and five NJCAA Women's Basketball Championship titles in Division II: 1992, 1993, 1998, 1999, and 2003.[13][10] After Ramsey's retirement, the team achieved a sixth championship win in 2006.[10] Famous players from the women's basketball team include Christelle N'Garsanet (2003), who was signed by the New York Liberty in the WNBA, and Cindy Ellis, who played for the Milwaukee Does in the Women's Professional Basketball League and was in the trials for the 1976 Olympic team.[14]

The ICC softball team has also been national champions twice: 1982, and 2009 as Division I.[10]
