Childhood and early life

Jeffrey Kinney was born and grew up in Fort Washington, Maryland, United States. He had attended the University of Maryland at College Park in the early 1990s. It was in college that Kinney created the popular comic strip Igdoof that ran in the campus newspaper, The Diamondback. While there, he knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

In 2004, FunBrain and Jeff Kinney released an online version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The website made daily entries until June 2005.[1]The book became an instant hit and the online version received about 20 million views as of 2009. Many online readers requested a printed version. Jeff had agreed and in 2007, Diary of A Wimpy Kid was published.[1] To date, five Wimpy Kid books have been released, plus a do-it-yourself book and a movie diary. In 2009, Kinney was named one of Time magazine's 100 "Most Influential People" in the world.[2]

Professional work

Kinney works full-time as a writer and designer of online games.[3] According to his website, he also created the kid-friendly website Poptropica. Poptropica is known by many children around the world. Most notably is his work Diary Of a Wimpy Kid. The series has 42 million copies in print world wide as of 2010 and was developed into a feature film. Kinney has also served as an executive producer.[4]

He also finished a commercial for the Play-Doh Dr. Fill 'N Drill Playset in 2009.

Films

On July 22, 2009, 20th Century Fox announced that Zachary Gordon would star in a film adaptation of Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books. The original release date was April 2, 2010, but the release was moved up to a March 19, 2010 U.S. release.[7] While the film was given mixed reviews by critics, it did well in the box office.

A second film, based on Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, was released on March 25, 2011.

In an interview, co-star Devon Bostick said that Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3 could be in the works and is "90% sure it will happen" depending on the success of Rodrick Rules.[8] Gordon said on his Facebook page that The Last Straw will begin filming in August (like the previous two films), and will possibly be released in March or April 2012.
