John Sapte
John Henry Sapte[1] was Archdeacon of Surrey[2] from 1888[3] to[4] his death on 4 June 1906.[5]
He was born on New Year's Eve 1821.[6] the 2nd son of Francis and Anna Sapte. He married Caroline,[7] daughter of the 1st Baron Gifford:[8] they had four sons and one daughter. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge[9] and ordained in 1845.[10] After a short curacy at Cuddesdon he was Rector of Cranleigh, Surrey from 1846 until his death on June 1906. He was also an Honorary Canon of Winchester from 1871 to 1888; Proctor in Convocation for the Clergy of the Surrey Archdeaconry from 1874 to 1888; and Rural Dean of Guildford from 1881[11] to 1888. He was also one of the driving forces behind the foundation of Cranleigh School.[12]
