The Long Beach City School District is a public school district that provides education to The City of Long Beach, Lido Beach, Point Lookout and East Atlantic Beach on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It currently houses a total of 4,355 students in all grades.[4]

The school board is composed of five elected members. Currently the board members are: Roy Lester (President), Darlene Tangney (Vice President), Dr. Dennis Ryan (Trustee), Patrick Gallagher (Trustee), and Stewart Mininsky (Trustee).

Although it identifies publicly as Long Beach Public Schools, it is actually not a 'public school district'—a legal term in New York—but an 'extended city school district', meaning it has a great deal more autonomy and flexibility than a regular school district.

The current Superintendent is David Weiss.

Schools and locations

Pre-elementary

The Long Beach City School District has one pre-elementary level school located in Lido Beach. The school is known by and named after the street on which it is located, Blackheath. The Blackheath School has two half-day schedules every day, with half of the student body attending either session. There are a total of 211 students enrolled.[5]

The pre-kindergarten program provides a nurturing, creative and academic environment for learning. The children's daily activities are crafted to enable and promote each child to develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically. In an atmosphere designed to promote self-esteem and ensure success, the children are provided with opportunities to engage in positive social interactions.[6] In late 2013, pre-k students moved to Lido School, and Blackhealth was do demolished as part of the School Preservation Plan.

Elementary

There are four elementary schools located within the Long Beach City School District: East School, located on Neptune Blvd.; West School, located on Maryland Ave.; Lindell School, located on Lindell Blvd.; and Lido School, located on Lido Blvd. adjacent to the Long Beach Middle School. Only Lido Elementary School is located outside of the City of Long Beach. All four of these schools house grades K-5, totaling 1,789 students.[7] [8] [9] [10]

Intermediate

The Long Beach City School District has one intermediate level school located in the district. It is located adjacent to the Lido Elementary School on Lido Blvd. It is also located on the same plot of land as the district's Administration Building in Lido Beach. Housed in this school are grades 6-8, totaling 970 students.[11] [12]

High school

Long Beach High School is also located in Lido Beach, on Lagoon Drive West. The high school is also located directly on Reynolds Channel, which borders the barrier island of Long Beach to the north. Long Beach High School houses grades 9-12. The student population of Long Beach High School is 1,021 students.[13][14]

In addition to the traditional high school is the alternative school at NIKE. This is located near the transportation garages on Lido Blvd. NIKE also houses alternative classrooms for grades 9-12.[15] There is also Harriet Eisman Community School for alternative education.

Private schools

Also located within the confines of the Long Beach City School District is the Long Beach Catholic Regional School, a parochial school housing grades K-8. This school is privately funded, though transportation is provided by the Long Beach City School District. LBCRS is located on West Broadway nearest the West End of Long Beach.[16]

Administration

The central Administration Building is located on Lido Blvd. in the same complex that houses both the Lido Elementary School and Long Beach Middle School. Most district offices are located here. But after superstorm Sandy administration is now housed in Long Beach City Hall .

Transportation

The Long Beach City School District housed in an outside on Lido Blvd. Buses are provided Some times schools, both public and private, within the district and within 5 miles of the district; however, students living within 4 mile of elementary school, 2 mile of the Middle School, and 1 mile of the high schools are not provided with transportation (the City of Long Beach bus service and local taxi services are used by some of these students). Some low-volume and special education out of district bus routes are operated on contract by private operators.

A newly paved and landscaped Parking lot is available for students at Long Beach High School for students with a valid New York State Class D license and a parking permit.
