OWL Magazine is a popular Canadian children's magazine founded in 1976. Aimed at those between the ages of 9 and 13, it is published ten times per year, including (since 2001) a summer issue in a smaller 'digest' format.
OWL stands for "Outdoors and Wild Life." In recent years, like chickaDEE (the older of its two spinoff magazines for younger children), the magazine has come to encompass a larger variety of topics. Regular features inside the magazine include weird news from around the world, how-to articles, science stories, a reader-driven advice column, as well as comics "The Outrageous World of Alex and Charlie" and "Max Finder Mystery". "The Sidesteppers," a previous regular comic, ended in early 2009. Memorable past aspects of the magazine have included Dr. Zed (written by the late Canadian scientist Gordon Penrose) and comic strip The Mighty Mites.
[edit] Alex and Charlie
Alex and Charlie is a humorous comic that regularly takes up 2 pages of the magazine. Alex - Artistic, and Creative twin sister of Charlie, Charlie- Funny, an Inventer, Dazelle - The Gang's Fashion and Drama Queen, Lizzy- An athlete, (loves to read Mystery books), Garth - The tough bully, owns a dog named Misty Sue, Tyler - The Practical jokester , loves to eat, and Morgan - Alex and Charlie's older sister, appears occasionally on the show.
Related publications from OWL have included books and videos, produced by former owner OWL Communications. In 1997, OWL (as well as chickaDEE and Chirp) was purchased by Bayard Press, which also publishes a number of Canadian French-language children's magazines.
OWL/TV was a half-hour television show that aired from 1985 to 1994 and was based on the magazine. Like the magazine it also focused on science and discovery and aired initially on CBC, and then later on CTV.
