1 | 1 | "Milwaukee, America" | Steven Conrad | Story by : Steven Conrad and Gil Bellows Teleplay by : Steven Conrad | November 3, 2015 | |
In 2012, the president of Iran dies in a helicopter crash, leaving anti-Israel candidate Cantar Walley the most likely to win the upcoming election. CIA operative Tom Tavner schemes to rig the election by getting his fellow operative and psychologically troubled son, John, a job at McMillan, a Milwaukee engineering firm that travels to Luxembourg often, where he will hand off money. John's brother Edward is sent to fetch him from Amsterdam, where he agrees to go back only if he loses a mechanical bull competition, which he deliberately throws. He pushes competitor Stephen Tchoo in front of a van to secure a spot and has McMillan worker Dennis McClaren provide urine for him to pass a drug test. Upon arrival in Luxembourg, the money bag is stolen by airport worker Edgar Barros. While going to confront him, John is forced to deter a curious Dennis by stabbing him in the leg. He is attacked by Barros' brothers and kills one of them to get away, recovering the bag and unknowingly giving it to Mikham Candahar, a man working for Walley. Having arrived late to a meeting, John is informed by his boss, Leslie Claret, that he will not be returning to Luxembourg. | ||||||
2 | 2 | "C-19" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad | February 23, 2017 | |
Luxembourg homicide detective Agathe Albans attempts to gain permission to interview Dennis about his stabbing in America, but Tom uses his Interpol connections to stall her. John's wife Alice, increasingly concerned for him, tries to get out of Edward what John is actually doing for work, but he refuses to talk. McMillan security guard and disgraced ex-cop Jack Birdbath reveals to John that he overheard him illicitly taking Dennis' urine. He forces him to steal aids from several impaired cops that guard the local evidence room, one aid being a therapy dog named Charlie, and then place a box with unknown contents in the room. Leslie threatens to fire John if he keeps parking in his parking spot, and eagerly sits in the company lot before work as John arrives, only for John to stop when he nearly hits Agathe, who has made it to America. | ||||||
3 | 3 | "McMillan Man" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad | February 23, 2017 | |
In 2002, Leslie is jailed for two years for embezzling his company's funds to feed his cocaine addiction. He gets a job with McMillan, but is told he will never go past divisional management. In the present, John does not park in Leslie's spot, but performs poorly at an important meeting and realizes he is about to be fired. Agathe is revealed to have made it to America after Tom's Interpol contact dies of a stroke, and she interviews Dennis, who John coaches beforehand. He performs passably but mentions John's name. On Dennis' advice, John goes on the company duck hunt to try and set things right with Leslie, but is instead forced to kill ducks for executive Lawrence Lacroix, who wants to impress a female subordinate. After John learns how important Charlie is to his owner, he considers keeping the dog, but decides to let him go home. | ||||||

John returns to Luxembourg and attacks Barros in the airport, taping him up and putting him in a backpack. He is unable to give the bag to Edward as planned, because Agathe is suspicious of him after an interview and has sent one of her colleagues to tail him. He tracks Mikham to his new hotel, but Barros' struggling alerts him and he attacks John before escaping. John is unable to find the money, but steals the safe from Mikham's room and hands Barros and the safe off to Edward and Dennis before performing well at a McMillan conference. He notices Rob Saperstein, a musician he once made music with, giving their CD with John's face on it to Agathe. Dennis and Edward break open the safe and find the passport of Japanese escort Numi Haruno inside. John follows Agathe to her apartment, but collapses from exhaustion right next to her. | ||||||
5 | 5 | "Un Monsieur Triste En Costume" | Ted Griffin | Steven Conrad | February 23, 2017 | |
While stationed in Amsterdam, John meets Saperstein and the two end up recording a full album the same night they meet. In the present, John breaks into Agathe's apartment after she leaves, but finds that she has taken the CD and is spotted by her young daughter Myna. He trades Barros back to his brothers in exchange for them leaving him alone, but they still scheme to kill him and take the rest of his money. Tom has Edward befriend Mikham's brother Kkyman to learn where Mikham is going to be, and John tracks him down and kills him. He goes to perform at a concert with Saperstein, but forgets the lyrics to their song and starts singing about his regrets over letting Leslie think poorly of him. Returning to Luxembourg, John finds the bag holding the money in the street. | ||||||
6 | 6 | "The Structural Dynamics of Flow" | Tucker Gates | Jill E. Blotevogel | February 23, 2017 | |
The bag is revealed to have been stolen by Numi, who is arrested for several other petty thefts. John, Leslie, Lacroix, and McMillan worker Peter Icabod, who is aware that John faked his credentials, are called in to interview about the night of Barros' murder. All of them unknowingly implicate John, while he notices the bag, which has an airport tag with his name on it, being transported through the station. While trying to steal it, Myna spots him again, and he fails to remove the tag. Edward attempts to write John's name in a piping book written by Leslie to provide an alibi, but finds that all the copies have been checked out from the local library. He alerts John, which prompts him to leave the station before he can be interviewed. | ||||||
7 | 7 | "Hello, is Charlie There?" | Michael Trim | Darby Kealey | February 23, 2017 | |
An increasingly disconnected John calls Charlie's owner and asks to speak to the dog, but is turned away. Stephen, who has returned to work with brain damage, is recovering, and John realizes he cannot sit near him anymore or he may identify John as the man who pushed him. Lacroix privately tells Leslie that McMillan is going bankrupt, and Leslie agrees to take on higher responsibilities in exchange for firing John, which Lacroix agrees to do after the next duck hunt. Alice listens to a voice message from John, who sings a song in which he admits he has been haphazardly riding his bike through traffic at night, not caring if he lives or dies as he wants to be free from the demands of his work. She promptly books a flight to Milwaukee, unknowingly reserving a seat next to Agathe, who is flying out to interview John. | ||||||
8 | 8 | "L'Affaire Contre John Lakeman" | Jim Whitaker | Zak Schwartz | February 23, 2017 | |
With Agathe coming to America, Tom informs John that he plans to pull him out of McMillan, but learns that the woman the money will be handed off to has been given a specific date and tells John to stay where he is so he can get it back. He steals a copy of Leslie's book that he checked out from Luxembourg from his office and doctors it to have his name in it. Birdbath explains to John that he has been acquitted for shooting a child while drunk and the box he placed was supposed to prove his guilt, and he now wants John to kill him at work to increase the amount of money he will send to the child's family. Recognizing Agathe from their flight and sympathetic to her struggles in America, Alice drives her to Milwaukee and contacts Dennis, knowing she cannot be seen near John but wanting him to know she is there. Leslie, wanting to give John one more chance, asks him to draw a circle just as Agathe enters the office, and John poorly draws it with his left hand to give off the impression that he is left-handed, prompting Leslie to tell John he is soon to be fired. Just before John can kill Birdbath, Dennis intercepts him to tell him about Alice, leading John to realize Agathe is following him. She and John play rochambeau to choose what day they interview, and after dozens of rounds, Agathe wins. John receives a message from Saperstein, which is a song and suicide note that thanks him for being his friend. John sits down with Agathe and tells her that he is not actually an engineer. | ||||||
9 | 9 | "Dick Cheney" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad & Bruce Terris | February 23, 2017 | |
John explains that he faked his credentials, and that the reason he was late to Leslie's meeting was because he was studying his book in the library. He passes her handwriting test by writing with his left hand, and Edward, having received the doctored book, sneaks it into the library moments before Agathe's colleague arrives to confirm John's alibi. John goes to see Alice at her motel, but Tom, having learned that Agathe is with her, stops him. Alice realizes Agathe is a police officer through her email address and goes through her room, finding that John is being investigated for murder. Tom accompanies John on the hunting trip and repeatedly tries to convince Leslie to keep John with him, which fails. Birdbath is angry that John failed to kill him, but ultimately decides he wants to keep living and does not report on John. Having run out of options, Tom tells John that he needs to pull a "Dick Cheney" by shooting Leslie in the face. | ||||||
10 | 10 | "Dead Serious Rick" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad & Bruce Terris | February 23, 2017 | |
John fulfills Icabod's request for physical contact to satisfy him and non-fatally shoots Leslie in the face, opening a spot for the Luxembourg team. Stephen, almost confident that John pushed him and ready to tell, is pushed in front of another van by John. John is almost stopped from leaving by faulty paperwork he has failed to correct, but his assistant Ron arrives at the last minute and saves him. Mikham's body is found, and the circumstances around him lead him to be implicated as Barros' murderer, although Myna tells Agathe she is certain she saw John in their home. She calls a hospitalized Leslie, who confirms that John showed up to their meeting with the bag. Tom orders John to kill the woman who will be picking up the money for Walley, but he instead goes for a bike ride and gets hit by a car. Edward, who has been informed by Alice that John is being investigated for murder, is against John leaving to get the money back, but Tom orders him to go. John dispatches Kkyman, who is now working for Walley, as well as a Barros brother that is tailing him, and catches up to Numi, but she explains that she left the money with the police, only wanting the bag for her puppet show. Agathe discovers the money and takes it, and John follows her to a train station, where she promises him that he will suffer no consequences for his crimes if he lets her go. As he watches her get on the train, Tom calls to tell him that Edward has been kidnapped and they need the money. |

Birdbath, who was asked to serve as backup in case Walley's woman got the money, is ordered by John to steal it back from Agathe, but he knocks himself out while trying. He robs him with the help of his friends, but he and Dennis lose two fingers each in the process and escape on the subway, realizing they left one of John's fingers behind. As a police officer gets on, John leads him away from the others using his blood trail, only to wind up next to Tom and Leslie. Leslie saves John by pretending the blood is a cocaine-induced nosebleed, and John reveals to Tom that he had been fingerprinted as a teenager, and he can therefore be identified. They return the store to get the finger just as the grocer is describing the incident to detective Nan Ntep, and he recognizes John immediately. | ||||||

Agathe explains to Alice that she took the money to lure John away from her uninvolved coworkers, and that her goal is to have Tom arrested. John has Leslie, a former prison dentist, pull his teeth to allow him to bypass facial recognition software. As Tom and Alice arrive in his hotel room, the police arrive to arrest Tom, forcing him and John to jump off the balcony to escape. Leslie, at John's request, fights his addiction and salvages McMillan, which is floundering under Lacroix, getting them on the path to Iran. Tom is caught and arrested, but Bernice provides an alibi of them going to Edward's wedding, which only they attend. John bypasses a fingerprint scanner, having intentionally had his fingers switched with Dennis', and buys a boat ticket to trick the police into thinking he is leaving by boat. In actuality, he goes to the Atlantic Ocean with the money tied to his ankle, where he plans to meet up with James, an English intelligence officer he met while under torture, at the border between France and England. He almost makes it, but finds himself surrounded by jellyfish and almost gives up until James goes past the meeting point and rescues him. He promises John that he will be okay as they enter England, and he simply responds "cool" as he looks back towards France and his eyes fill up with tears. |
Production
Development
On May 14, 2015, it was reported that Amazon had given the production, written by Steven Conrad and then titled The Patriot, a pilot order.[2] On September 23, 2015, the series' pilot order was confirmed and further information regarding the series was released. It was announced that the series had been retitled Patriot and that Conrad was confirmed to direct the pilot episode and executive produce alongside Gil Bellows, Glenn Ficarra, Charlie Gogolak, and John Requa.[3][4]
On December 18, 2015, it was announced that the production had been given a series order.[5] On January 27, 2017, it was reported that the rest of season one would premiere in its entirety on February 24, 2017.[6]
On April 18, 2017, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season.[7] On October 10, 2018, it was announced that the second season would premiere on November 9, 2018.[8]
Casting
In August 2015, it was announced that Kurtwood Smith, Michael Dorman, Kathleen Munroe, and Terry O'Quinn had been cast in the pilot's lead roles.[9][10][11] On March 22, 2016, it was reported that Chris Conrad, previously cast in a guest appearance in the pilot episode, had been upped to a series regular capacity for the remainder of season one.[12]

Reception
Season | Critical response | ||
---|---|---|---|
Rotten Tomatoes | Metacritic | ||
1 | 82% (28 reviews)[15] | 68 (16 reviews)[16] | |
2 | 100% (6 reviews)[17] | 80 (4 reviews)[18] |
On Rotten Tomatoes it received an overall score of 91%, and an overall score of 71 on Metacritic.[19][20]
Season 1
The first season met with positive critical response. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an 82% approval rating with an average rating of 6.5 out of 10 based on 28 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Patriot is dark, quirky, and often funny -- and although its risks don't always pay off, the series is still savvy and inspired enough to watch."[15] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the season a score of 68 out of 100 based on 16 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[16]
Many of the first season's Luxembourg based exterior scenes were filmed in Prague.[21] The Luxemburger Wort's culture correspondent noted the apparent lack of effort and accuracy in portraying the landmarks and geography that characterize Luxembourg City, with Prague being a poor substitute for their depiction.[21] He recorded that the frequent onscreen appearance of unmistakable famous Prague landmarks, such as the Charles Bridge, throughout Luxembourg shots hinder the suspension of disbelief for viewers familiar with either location.[21] Additionally, he identified certain factual inaccuracies about Luxembourg in the script, including a claim that Brazilian nationals make up a substantial minority of Luxembourg residents, when in fact it is Portuguese nationals.[21] Despite what he labeled as these "absurd inaccuracies" he recommended the series for fans of dark comedy.[21]
Season 2
The second season also received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 100% approval rating with an average rating of 6.7 out of 10 based on 11 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Patriot's second season is dark as pitch and ticks along to a slow-burning surreality, but viewers who are willing to invest in the series' moody pleasures will find themselves infiltrated by its scabrous humor and crackerjack dialogue."[17] On Metacritic, it has a score of 80 out of 100 based on 4 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18]
