Born in Morgantown, North Carolina, Williams appeared in his first film The Vengeance of Winona, in 1914. In 1922, he made his Broadway stage debut in the popular stage comedy Abie's Irish Rose. Williams also appeared in productions of That French Lady, Scarlet Pages, and Love, Honor and Betray.
He appeared in five films before landing his first, and last, leading role in the 1931 Frank Capra film Platinum Blonde, opposite Jean Harlow.[1]

Williams was married three times; the first to singer Marion Harris in 1921 with whom he had one child. Williams and Harris divorced the following year. In 1924, he married actress Alice Lake. The couple divorced in 1925. At the time of his death, Williams was married to Nina Penn.
Four days after the premiere of Platinum Blonde,[2] Williams died of a ruptured appendix at the age of 37.[1] He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
