Robert Vigil (born October 26, 1953) is the former treasurer of the State of New Mexico indicted on 28 counts of extortion, money laundering and racketeering. [1] He was found not guilty of all but one of these charges [2]. The trial was the result of a two-year long FBI investigation of financial improprieties suspected of Vigil, his predecessor as Treasurer Michael Montoya and others responsible for investing money for the State of New Mexico. A highlight of the trial was a video [3] of Vigil taking $2000 in cash. The unnamed witness claimed that Vigil was receiving a "kickback" for giving the witness' company a contract to invest New Mexico government money.
