Shots Studios commonly known as Shots, is a studio in San Francisco, CA that develops, online comedy videos for the YouTube platform.

History

Shots Studios was created in 2009 by video game creators and brothers, John Shahidi and Sam Shahidi. The company was originally RockLive and in 2013 rebranded to Shots Studios.

The company held its first round of seed funding in 2012.[1][2][3][4][5] The funding round raised $1.6 million from Shervin Pishevar, Floyd Mayweather, Omar Epps,[6] NALA investments, and Tom McInerney.[2][3][4][5]

In April 2015, Shots Studios raised $8.5 million in new funding, led by Chinese venture-capital firm WI Harper, Launch Fund, Upfront Ventures, 500 Startups, music producer Rodney Jerkins and the venture arm of Major League Baseball [7] and in September 2015, the company raised another $4 million in funding led by DCM Ventures, adding on to its $8.5 million Series A. The company has raised $15.2 million to date."[8]

After Twitter CEO, Anthony Noto accidentally tweeted a message about an acquisition for Twitter, a source close to the company confirmed that Twitter is looking to buy Shots Studios for $150 million .[9][10] [11] CEO, John Shahidi stated that the company is not for sale.[12]

On April 20, 2016 it was announced that Shots Studios purchased the Mindie app, a video app that allows teenagers to create their own music videos.[13]

In 2016, Shots Studios turned its focus from a social media app to a content creator. It has worked with internet stars Lele Pons and Rudy Mancuso to create videos and boost millions of views to their Youtube channels. The content creation business model brings strong ad revenue and partnership interest from Facebook, Netflix, and Verizon.[14] [15]

Memep by Shots Studios

The Memep app is a comedy app for Android and iPhone devices.[16][17][18][19] Originally launched as Shots in the App Store in November 2013 and for Android devices in August 2014. It is the first anti-bullying social networking app.[20]

The Memep app allows users to share comedy and fun links from around the internet along with sharing selfies.[21][22][23] The app does not have a public comment feature over concerns about cyber-bullying and does not post follower counts.[24] The Memep app does allow users to directly message others.[16][17][25][26][27][28]

In February 2015, Floyd Mayweather announced his Manny Pacquiao fight inside the app by posting their signed contract.[29][30]

On March 3, 2016, the Memep app began supporting external content inside the app and released a trending section called "Funny" that ranks the comedic content.[31][32]

As of 2016, the Memep app has 8 million users. [33]
