St. Xavier's School is a coeducational, secondary school in Burdwan (Bardhaman), West Bengal, India. Various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are encouraged for the students' integral development.[1]

Beginnings

In 1961 Mr. K.P.A. Menon, District Magistrate of Burdwan, was unable to get his son admitted to the Jesuit-run St. Xavier’s Calcutta. But in 1964 the Calcutta Province Jesuits came to help him establish St. Xavier's School, Burdwan. In the meantime, along with some local ladies, he laid the groundwork for the school, beginning with a nursery in 1963. Burdwan Educational Trust was formed as its governing body with Mr. Menon as its first president and Jesuit Fathers Gales and Hincq as its first school administrators.

Development

The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi, and prepares candidates for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Indian School Certificate (ISC) examinations.
Facilities include laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, and computer science, library and reading hall, an assembly hall with stage, indoor games room, playing fields, and school buses. Recently, an audio-visual hall has also come up in the secondary building.
To cultivate team spirit, the school is divided into four houses: Loyola (red), Xavier (blue), Gandhi (green), Netaji (yellow). Inter-House competitions-dancing, singing, debates & quiz form an integral part of the holistic development of the students.

The school also celebrates cultural events with much enthusiasm.

"Edu-Fest" is the annual educational fest of learning. It is one of the most awaited events of the year and boasts of science exhibits, seminars on day to day matters, excursions, appreciation of education, art and diversity. Edu-fest currently is a 3-day event, held in the last week of July; differentiated into Science day, Literature and Arts day and the Seminar day.

The Annual Sports Day is held in November, while the annual function, "Xtasy"- a gala event, dedicated to parents is held in December.

The school has recently expanded into a full-degree-college, "St. Xavier's College, Burdwan" affiliated to the University of Burdwan-which began classes from 11 July 2014.
