Untitled[edit]

I might be being a bit fussy but I've changed the wording of this and similar articles from "A referendum was held in Ireland on 7 June 2001" to "three referendums were held". I think that it is more correct to say that each vote is a separate referendum, and it conforms with ordinary usage. For example I've found the following quotes from a debate held in the Dail following the defeat of Nice I:

  • J. O'Keefe: "Every conceivable mistake was made in the run up to the referendum ...A mix and match approach was taken, combining it with other referenda, including an attempt to throw in one concerning judicial conduct."
  • Cowen: "The Referendum Commission, operating independently of the Government, had the task of explaining to the public the issues involved in the Nice treaty referendum and the two further referenda taken on the same day."

According to the referendum article referendums is the more correct plural so that's the one I've used. Consideration might want to be given to moving this and similar articles to the format "Irish constitutional referendums, X".
