Historically, Bach Long Vi was inhabited by Chinese. In 1937, French Indichina seized the island. In 1943, Japanese took over it. Upon the surrender of Japan in 1945, Bach Long Vi was ruled by the Chinese Nationalist government. In 1949, the Chinese Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan, but they continued to occupy Bach Long Vi. In 1955 the Chinese Communist government seized the island. At the time, the island had a population of 249, all of whom were ethnic Han Chinese. In 1957, China handed over the island to Vietnam. Name of the island[edit]
Name of the island has clear Chinese origin. Current main section mentions “a name the comes from a Vietnamese legend regarding the origins of Halong Bay.” Please explain, or it should be deleted. Jifeng2005 (talk) 08:18, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Any objections to a correction?[edit]
"In the contemporary published map of People's Republic of China and other nations, this island still remained a part of China(Goode's World Atlas, Rand McNally, 1933)."
This sentence is incorrect; it should read "Republic of China" not "People's Republic of China." There was no PRC in 1933. The Chinese language version of this page correctly uses "Republic of China" in this sentence.
