POV: last two paragraphs[edit]

I like this article until the last two paragraphs. They go pretty far away from NPOV. At best, statements like these need to be explicitly sourced. Most of it should probably just go. Comments? -- Spireguy 04:20, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like an obituary, and is not encylopaedic, is it? It may, however, be true. His biographies do point out these characteristics, so perhaps it could be reworded to describe his personality as seen by his fellow travellers? docboat 09:30, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment[edit]

He has been described by some as a self-indulgent risk-taker impervious to the sensitivities of others; one who had little time for those who didn’t live up to his high standards and expectations; and he was even accused of disliking women. In reality, these labels were grossly inaccurate, for he was in fact a very shy, private man who was self-effacing and hated publicity. He was a deep thinker, an avid reader of the classics, and although he never married, he adored his sister and two nieces with whom he lived when not on some distant shore.

Tilman had a great sense of humour, perhaps too subtle for many of his listeners. It was one of his greatest joys to laugh at himself, and see the funny side of life's little foibles. An example is his 'discovery' of Tilman's Disease, characterized as "the inability to put one foot before the other". He wrote seven books about his mountain travels, and eight books on his years sailing to extreme climates. One of the last 'gentleman adventurers', Bill Tilman's stoic and courageous exploits have earned him a place of honour as one of the greatest in the pantheon of explorers.

I have cleaned out the references to Dave Glen's 'biography', which has been 'sold' under several different titles since 2003 but has not yet been delivered. The same applies to the 'DVD' from the same source. Bibliography Mess[edit]

Both Glenn's and Shipton's books should not appear within the subject's Bibliography. This is reserved for books he wrote himself. Eric Shipton's books most surely figure as a reference to Tillman's life and should appear there. Glenn's is the third biography written, and does not appear in print: it is an ebook, and should be clearly indicated as such. I note that he has since surrendered his Wikipedia identity. I thank him for the photographic contribution prior to his demise. The collected works are just that: collections. From a historical and biographical viewpoint the books he wrote deserve to be listed chronologically, then mention should be made of the subsequent issue of the collected works' publications.
