Pettifer was born in Durban, Natal, South Africa in 1953. The family moved to Merseyside when he was 14. He is the younger brother of folk musician Linda Thompson.

Linda Thompson (née Pettifer, 23 August 1947) is an English folk rock singer... Born in Hackney, London, she moved with her family to her mother's home city[1] of Glasgow, Scotland, at the age of six. Actor Brian Pettifer is her brother.
