I created this article so that it could be referenced from the article Proposed redefinition of SI base units. Move to coherent units[edit]

How do you feel about moving the page to coherent units. It seems to me that it is more discoverable. Further there is already a page dedicated to that name which is redirected to metric system. For now I am redirecting that page to here. TStein (talk) 15:41, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not too keen. My plan is to develop the article to show

Units describing the same quantities were aligned with each other - for example, adjusting feet and inches so that there were 12 inches in a foot, not 11.32 (say) inches in a foot. (Note that 12 factorises into 3x4, 11.32 is not even an integer.
This was followed by aligning squares and cubes in a coherent way, defining the acre as 4840 square yards, rather then a strip 220 yards long and 22 yards wide.
Early attempts at coherence where water was used as the medium of equivalence (1 gram the mass of 1 cm³ of water.
This was followed by coherent units as we know them.

In short, the article will be about the development of the concept of coherence in measurements, not just the units themselves.

I don't understand the Example :-([edit]

I assume the Example section exists to clarify the concept. However I don't understand the example.

It focuses on " horsepower, which is defined as 550 foot-pounds per second ". Ok, so what? The text claims this is "non-coherent". But why? If I understood "non-coherent" I would not need the example. Johnjbarton (talk) 15:28, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
