Birthplace is Toronto, Ontario, Canada[edit]

Born Elmer Forsyth to Margaret Ellen Nicolle and Cecil Forsyth on March 14, 1890 (married 07 Dec 1889 in Toronto, ON, Canada). It is unknown if Margaret and Cecil ever divorced however by the 1891 Census of Canada, Cecil was living with his family and indicated his marital status as single.

Elmer moved to California with his mother, Margaret before 1910 and assumed surname of Clifton. Research shows Elmer may have had a stepfather by the name of John Clifton who was residing in Chicago in 1919. There is a photo of Elmer, approx age 5, and the photographer is indicated as "Nicol & Son, Monmouth, Ill." Family records indicate Margaret and Elmer may have resided for a time in Illinois prior to moving to California.

It is unknown if his mother ever remarried. In the 1910 Census of Los Angeles, she is listed as Margaret Owens. Her obituary has not been found or her social security death index information from the US.
