Cleanup[edit]
I'll be doing cleanup on this page. Add any comments to my desk. Alphabeter 00:35 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Dates[edit]
This article is free-floating in time, it requires references to other articles and outside sources to know what time period is being discussed. A few dates would be helpful. Halfelven (talk) 17:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- "Punishment and Power in the Making of Modern Japan" by Daniel V. Botsman. Princeton University Press. chapter 3 (there may be more) has some discussoin on shi no ko sho. Available on google books. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.13.254.134 (talk) 06:43, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps this article should be merged with Feudal Japan hierarchy. This other article represents Japanese society during the same period as this article as having only two social classes and then mentions merchants as a sort of aside. It has been marked for copy-edit and needs a lot of work. Fixing it is going to make it very similar to this article. Therefore, I'm proposing they be merged. There is another article on the topic, Four occupations: much elaborated, but not mentioning other Confucian countries.--Shanghainese.ua (talk) 14:15, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm somewhat opposed to the merging of this article with Japanese society due to its origin and use in China as a neo-Confucian idea. It was later adopted in Japan, but that does not make it a Japanese idea. Its roots and main usage was in China, and it was later used to a different means in Japan. Not the same thing. - These should not be merged. They are based on similar characters, but maybe treated differently in different countries. Benjwong (talk) 04:43, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Merge to Four occupations[edit]
I propose this article be merged with Four occupations. (In fact, given how superior that article is, I think we should just merge the edit history from here, redirect, and scrap most of the content.) — LlywelynII 15:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
