Divide the article into two

Hi. There are two Gardenvales - one is Gardenvale 3185 and Gardenvale 3187. Can you fix that up by making two articles one Gardenvale (3185) and other Gardenvale (3187). Maybe even a Gardenvale (Disambiguity) giving links to both suburbs. cheers136.186.1.197 21:38, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi,

I've looked on Auspost, Australian Gazetteer and in the Melway but can only see one Gardenvale (3185) - 3187 is the postcode for its neighbour to the south, Brighton East. On searching Google I get 2 matches (with 37 duplicates) of two federal awards with addresses in Gardenvale 3187 which are clearly in the 3185 one (Perfect Blinds and Stripwood Antiques, 113 and 131 Gardenvale Road). My 1998 UBD suggests Gardenvale was at that time an ungazetted locality split along Gardenvale Road between Elsternwick (3185) and Brighton East (3187) - this may explain the odd distinction. Also, don't forget to call Bayside City Council because the Gardenvale 3187 is in Bayside. I do recall someone telling me that Gardenvale 3185 is the smallest suburb in Victoria.136.186.1.193 03:39, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

That I'd believe regarding the suburb size. It's only about 4 blocks - quite normal in Adelaide but for Melbourne, unusually small. According to the ABS, Gardenvale and Ripponlea are 0.3km²; Travancore and Princes Hill are 0.4; Kooyong is 0.5 while South Kingsville is 0.6. Note that the above only indicates that Gardenvale didn't have its own post office but was served by two rather than the usual one - look at Central Park (Caulfield/Glen Iris) for another example. This was unique to Melbourne - no other city did things this way. I have confirmed by email with Australia Post that 3187 is no longer an accurate postcode for Gardenvale, although it once was (and despite what the UBD says, both applied to the entire suburb). I would dispute. Gardenvale is two suburbs. I know people who live on Martin St, Gardevale and the postcode is 3187 and is in the Bayside Municipality and yes Gardenvale does have two postcodes, not because of the fact but because people still consider where they live to be Gardenvale despite what the Department for Suburbs. Martin Street is entirely within Brighton (and Bayside) - I actually confirmed this with the councils by phone at the time, but it also agrees with the 2001 and 2006 Melway editions. Boundary of Gardenvale

Hi, Doesn't Gardenvale begin at Gardenvale Rd not Elster Ave?136.186.1.192 20:36, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Phoned Glen Eira this morning and their own map for land-allocation purposes shows borders identical with the Melway. However the 1998 UBD as mentioned treats it as a locality of Elsternwick (I've since found out that as it was gazetted in 1966 the UBD was wrong on this) Orderinchaos78 21:44, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Phoned City of Bayside and they have advised that no part of Gardenvale is presently within their boundaries, although it did used to be bigger at one stage in the recent past (not sure when it changed and I can't find out easily without access to SLV as I'm WA-based) - it formerly included the triangle between the railway and Nepean Highway. Boundary part 2

Hi Guys

I live on Clarence Street, Elsternwick. This is a few blocks further North than the boundary this article suggests, however a lot of people refer to this area as Gardenvale. It is also the site of the former Rosstown Railway Garden Vale railway station, and is officially in Gardenvale if you look up the gazetted location (37 53 35 S, 145 00 40 E) in Google Maps. That said, my postal address is officially Elsternwick 3185.

I also note that most businesses along Martin Street, Brighton on the Western side of Nepean Highway refer to themselves as Gardenvale. As far as I know, their postal addresses are Brighton or Brighton North, so it could probably be regarded as an informal name or a locality name for that area. Also note that the article about Gardenvale station which is located on the Western side of the highway suggests it is in Gardenvale.

I've added text reflecting this to the article under the Geography section of the article. Please feel free to discuss further.

Yeah, it's confusing for any onlookers :) I've looked at a 1972 Gregorys and 1979 and 1988 Melways (which I didn't own during the last one) - seems the boundary was not fixed at all until after 1988 sometime, and the *entire* suburb was within Elsternwick. The gazettal seems to relate to a very imprecise location in terms of boundaries. The positioning of the word "Gardenvale" in the 1972 Gregorys suggests that it may have extended as much as two blocks to the west of the railway (Cochrane Street) Orderinchaos 15:10, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Train Station/Boundrys

According to the boundrys currently specified in the article, the train station is not in gardenvale. The station is on the west side of Nepean Highway. Gardenvale is officially (AFAIK) located as specified, but the shops on martin st specify themselves as gardenvale in a casual sense. (Gardenvale newsagency, Gardenvale supermarket, etc) I have noticed that many stores actually in Gardenvale (Eg, Dalgarnos, the Chemist) specify themselves as Elsternwick. I heard a rumour a while back (mid 2006) that Gardenvale was soon to disappear, and be absorbed by Elsternwick. - No idea about the truth of this. - Daurnimator 13:57, 6 June 2007 (UTC) (College St Resident)

Yeah I think Gardenvale has a confusing parallel existence as a gazetted suburb and as a generally known locality name (I doubt whoever drew the former really could have done much public consultation, judging by the sheer confusion as to what is in and what isn't, and the general understanding in the local area that they did get it wrong). Part of the problem is the LGA boundary between Bayside and Glen Eira - suburb names are gazetted under an LGA (eg Land Act - Naming of Localities - City of ____) so generally do not cross LGA lines. The ones that do are generally larger suburbs whose formal boundaries predate the LGAs whose boundaries they violate. As for the Elsternwick thing, that's got to do with the fact Gardenvale didn't have its own postcode listing until 2000, so any that predate that had to give their mailing address as Elsternwick.
