Timewind Could you provide specific examples of spam and "fake data" provided by Grorp? I've looked at the most recent few difs, and it looks to me like Grorp is trying to fix spam. Also, the current photo on top of the page seems to be a copyvio, and I've tagged it as such on Commons. ~ ONUnicorn^{(Talk|Contribs)}problem solving 18:19, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick response. "Preferring music over studying, he quit school at the age of 16, playing rock guitar in bars." - is a good example. I'm digging now in history to see what else has been changed. Some content has been deleted and some changed I will provide more examples after digging into history more precisely. Some of his changes were really fixes, I appreciate.

That comes from the Financial Times article which Timewinds added here, then I used, then Timewinds deleted it here. It said, and I quote:

Dr Garik Israelian, one of the world’s leading astrophysicists, was born in Yerevan in 1963 and is a grateful beneficiary of the Soviet education system. “I was a disaster at school,” he recalls. “I never studied — I just liked music.” To his family’s despair, he left school at 16, went to work in a theatre and indulged his passion for rock guitar, forming a band and playing in bars. “But then I saw [the film] Solaris and it changed me 180 degrees. I was so inspired. I started reading science fiction and decided to go to university. It meant I had to study maths and physics from the beginning, at home. But the great thing about the system then was that it didn’t matter how badly you did at school, so long as you passed the exams for university. Otherwise I would have had no chance.”

If Garik Israelian had no problem telling this story in an interview, then I don't see why it should be suppressed from the Wikipedia article. Wikipedia is not a repository for professional bios written by their 'representatives'. Besides, I thought the story was an important piece of the puzzle why the Starmus Festival is such a music event instead of just science. Timewinds, if you didn't like the way I paraphrased it, then you should have made a post on the talk page rather than repeatedly casting aspersions on me as an editor because you didn't like that I'd messed with your article. You don't own this article, and in fact you shouldn't be editing it at all. Grorp (talk) 19:46, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Garik Israelyan Shatinyan (name dispute)

There have been several edits by users to remove the name "Garik Israelyan Shatinyan" from the article. I'm quite sure when I made the edit on March 8, 2023 adding that name, it was on his CV/bio that was posted on the website of Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).

However, today I notice the CV seems to have been changed. (new CV) The URL imbeds the date 2023-03, which may have been right after I added the name/spelling "Garik Israelyan Shatinyan" on March 8th. (Garik and associates seem to keep tabs on this article.)

An Internet search cache [1] still shows the Shatinyan name in the IAC 'directory' even though going to that directory now only finds the spelling "Garik Israelian", not "Israelyan" and no "Shatinyan".

There are, however, several other search results to professional references to "Garik Israelyan Shatinyan" including:

• list of Spanish researchers from data obtained 10/6/2022 to 3/1/2023 and here
• an event dated July 2022, Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) and here and here
• Professor lists from 2011-2012 and 2014-2015 and 2015-2016, University of La Laguna
• list of projects eligible for aid 2012 University of the Balearic Islands

I don't know if perhaps "Garik Israelyan Shatinyan" is his official name in Spain while simultaneously using "Garik Israelian" as his preferred name when dealing in English, or whether he has recently officially changed his name/spelling. Either way, "Garik Israelian" seems to be his preferred English name and spelling, whereas "Garik Israelyan Shatinyan" is on too many official announcements and professional directories throughout the prior 10 years to ignore. Perhaps we should include the long name as "also known as" or "previously known as".

I have no specific source to explain the mystery. Does anyone else have an explanation?

@Grorp, this time you are correct. And this it what I've been telling you several times. Here is the detailed explanation. Garik has Armenian Origin. His Birth name and current full name is Garik Israelian. When Armenia has started printing their passports Armenian last names went our with 'yan' ending. However Garik has left Armenia long time before that and as many other Armenian world wide he is writing his last name ending with 'ian'. When he became citizen of Spain, Spain wants their citizens to have also mother's last name included, which is Shatiryan. His mother was Seda Shatiryan. By some mistake, in some sources, including IAC, it was written with a typo as Shatinyan (not Shatiryan) adding it into Garik's name. In Order to clarify this confusion he went into fixing this as much as possible.
