supersede[edit]

I should have checked the history as I would have seen the spelling has been part of an edit war already!

Research shows that -cede is not the correct spelling. The latin root is sedere meaning sit above, compared with cedere meaning to go. However, from the 19th century, the -cede has been mistakenly used so much it seems to be in regular usage. It appears in some dictionarys, however "Professors of English" will say it is incorrect.

Change it back if you like, I am not going to argue. However, it does appear on lists of common misspelt words, so expect others to change it in future!
