Really "French-American"?[edit]

The article describes him as being "French-American" but then says he was born in Romania to Hungarian Jewish and German parents...how does this make him French? Historian932 (talk) 16:52, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see that he is American. It appears he became a French citizen after his family moved to France when he was a child, following WWI and the break-up of Austria-Hungary. He did undergraduate and graduate work at Paris institutions, converted to Catholicism in 1933 and changed his name to a French one. He went to the US for fieldwork among Indians of the Southwest, became a psychoanalyst, and taught at several places, but never had a permanent academic position in the US. He returned to France about 1960, living there the rest of his life. I don't see that he is French-American, although he did graduate work here and did other work for more than a decade. In addition, his writings seem to have had more influence in France and Europe.Parkwells (talk) 19:51, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
