The movie was filmed on location in Georgia, and the story's setting was changed to Georgia, but otherwise remained faithful to the novel.

Should read:

The movie was filmed on location in Georgia, however the story's setting was not changed and remained faithful to the novel.

The source is the movie itself. Pascagoula, MS and Mobile, AL are referenced in the movie as being in the vicinity of the Jackson cabin. Nowhere in the movie is Georgia or any place in Georgia mentioned.
