I am proposing to make a major update to the Hampton pages. As a complete newby to Wikipedia updating I have drafted the words and links in a MSword doc as below. (Although during the cut and paste into Wikipedia it seems to have lost all the formatting and reference links). While I may have been involved with the Hampton development since the first brick was laid and hence know a lot about it my Wikipedia experience is just starting. Therefore I have been reading up on the help pages and doing some practise in the sandbox. Regards Arty_of_PE Arty of PE (talk) 12:03, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hampton is a developing township to the south of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. The first two residential areas to be complete are Hampton Hargate, which is home to a community of around 1700 homes, and Hampton Vale, with approximately 1900 homes. Each neighbourhood is based around its own local centre with community facilities, shops and primary school. Work is now underway on a third neighbourhood, Hampton Leys, which, like the other neighbourhoods will have its own distinct character. Adjoining these is Hampton's central and commercial area where the Serpentine Green shopping centre, secondary school, Hampton College, and two business parks are located. Eventually Hampton will have up to 8,500 new homes spread over its four local areas, with additional schools, local centres and leisure facilities, as well as commercial and retail areas providing more than 12,000 jobs. Construction started in 1996 and is scheduled to continue until at least 2023. Homes Since the first arrivals to Holly Walk, Hampton Hargate, in 1997, more than 4,500 new homes have been built at a rate of up to 500 a year. More than 30 home builders and housing associations have provided everything from one bed apartments to luxury family homes and retirement properties on Hampton.

Nearly 900 units of affordable rented housing have so far been provided.

Innovative homes schemes include a zero carbon house built in association with Morris Homes as a model self-build of the future . Its range of eco-friendly features means the house creates the same amount of energy as it uses. Two self-build schemes have been included, allowing people to design and build their own homes. Schools The success of Hampton’s schools has led to rapid expansion: Hargate Primary School was built in 2000 with one entry form (FE), extended in 2002 to two FE, and further extended in 2012 to three FE. Hampton Vale Primary was built in 2004 as a 1FE school, expanded to a 2FE in 2006 and in 2013 is being expanded to a 3FE. Peterborough City Council is in 2013 building an additional primary on Clayburn Road to meet the demand for places as Hampton has proved so popular with families. Older students are served by Hampton College, opened as a 4FE in 2005, judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted reports in 2007 and 2010. In 2012 68% of key stage 4 students achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grades A*-C . The College holds Silver Eco status and is currently expanding to accommodate up to 1,050 students plus 200 sixth formers by the end of 2013 . In 2012 the school was increased to a 7FE. The College grounds include a 200-seat amphitheatre.

Economy Hampton has a jobs-to-homes ratio of 1.25 . Total rateable value of Hampton businesses now exceeds £20m. . By 2012 5,800 new jobs had been created within Hampton – most recently national IT suppliers Kelway, bringing 200 jobs. The 2011 UK census showed Hampton and Orton ward have the highest proportion of employed people in Peterborough . Four out of five adults aged 16-74 living in the area – or 80.3% - are ‘economically active’ . Hampton’s geographical position alongside the A1 has been a key factor in attracting companies such as IKEA, Debenhams and Prologis – all of whom have distribution centres at Kingston Park. Other companies doing business in Hampton include News International, Kiddicare, GKL Northern and Volvo. Hampton is the national headquarters of the charity Deafblind UK. The Serpentine Green shopping centre occupies 280,000 sq ft, and during 2012 footfall in the centre increased from 5.8m to 6.1million . As well as regional shopping each neighbourhood within Hampton has its own neighbourhood centre including convenience shops, restaurants, offices and apartment living. All are on bus routes with real time information displays.

Community There are currently two community centres on Hampton, the first alongside Hargate Primary School. A second community centre opened in 2011, at Hampton Vale local centre, used by groups offering everything from art classes to zumba . The 3 miles of cycleway through the southern part of Hampton are part of Peterborough’s popular 50-mile Green Wheel route encircling the city. Hampton Football Club has grown to now have 23 separate squads . Volunteers play an important part in maintaining and improving Hampton's open spaces through wildlife surveys, habitat creation and scrub clearance at the wildlife reserve and monthly litter picks. Other provision at Hampton includes an 86-place Care Home at Avery House , Hampton Children’s Centre , and an autism centre .

Environment Hampton has been cited by Natural England as an exemplar of how to integrate new development into the surrounding landscape . By 2013 there is the equivalent of 80sq m of woodland, 180sq m of lakes and 240sq m of nature reserve for every household . Ecology and biodiversity charities Froglife, the Wildlife Trust and Buglife, help to manage the open space – and are involved in the design of 630 acres set aside for wildlife as development continues. Eighteen species of dragonfly and 120 species of water beetle have been recorded at Hampton . Hampton is also a site of regional importance for Black Hairstreak, Grizzled Skipper and Dingy Skipper butterflies – three of at least 27 species recorded there. The arts A £50,000 sculpture competition resulted in David Nash OBE RA being commissioned to create a five piece work, The Noon Vessel’, for the courtyard of Hampton College.

History Hampton’s roots lie in the once- thriving brickmaking industry in Peterborough . The abandoned workings have been reclaimed and remodelled to create communities around a network of parkland, lakes and nature reserve representing 50 percent of the total land area . 1993 Peterborough City Council grants planning permission for approximately 5,200 homes and commercial areas at Hampton 1996 Hampton Nature Reserve , created from the old brickworking channels, is designated an SSSI: site of special scientific interest 1997 Crown Lakes Country Park opened in July, with 85 acres of parkland and lakes serving the whole of Peterborough 1997 December: Hampton’s first residents move into homes on Holly Walk, Hampton Hargate in time for Christmas 1998 O&H Properties Ltd buy the Hampton development from Hanson who originally acquired the site from London Brick Company 1999 Serpentine Green shopping centre is opened 2000 Hampton Hargate Primary School opens 2002 Cygnet Park commercial area opens for business with Deafblind UK and News International the first occupants 2003 The 1,000th home is occupied 2004 A second primary school opens at Hampton Vale to cater for the township's growing population 2005 Hampton College is opened by the Duke of Kent as a four form entry secondary school 2006 The 100,000th tree is planted, equal to more than 20 trees for every home 2007 A survey at Hampton nature reserve records an estimated 30,000 Great Crested Newts , one of Europe’s largest populations of this protected species 2008 Hampton Vale local centre is finished and opens with a range of shops and eateries 2009 Amazon announces it’s bringing its distribution centre to Hampton 2010 Hampton gets its own Parish Council 2011 July: More than 5,500 jobs are recorded as being created within Hampton 2011 Hampton Vale Community Centre opens in November 2012 A third primary school, Hampton Community Primary School, opens in a temporary base in Hargate School 2013 Clayburn Road Community Sports and Library Centre is due to open during 2013
