Canada secured a position on April 20th mathematically. The mininimum value they can achieve is 2715, no nation below fifth (except for Russia) can achieve greater than 2705 at this time. USA has a minimum of 2705, would need Kazakhstan to be relegated, or to win one more game to secure a position.18abruce (talk) 21:19, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Canada legitimately qualified when Russia defeated Slovakia. Joel225sp (talk) 17:55, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Kazakhstan are unable to qualify, do they warrant inclusion in this list now.216.232.184.221 (talk) 20:54, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Kazakhstan, China, and Japan all deserve mention on this list. It would not be difficult to place an asterisk and a note at the bottom which states that these teams are mathematically eliminated. It also would not be difficult to color their row's similar to how the United States and Canada have their rows colored to signal that they have secured spots for the Sochi Olympics.--SargentIV (talk) 01:29, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
hmmm, what about latvia, norway, or austria, where do you cut it off? The full ranking are readily available for anyone who wishes to know, but I thought this was a list that indicates who can still avoid the qualification tournaments. Listing teams that will not even participate at the top level seems pointless.216.232.184.221 (talk) 03:05, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If Germany is the lowest team that can mathematically qualify then cutting the chart off at No. 10 is reasonable. (Also, is there any rule which states that the 8 women's Ice Hockey teams must come from three geographical regions [the Americas, Europe, and Asia] as is the case with Curling?)--SargentIV (talk) 12:43, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think you make a good point about cutting it off at ten because of germany. And there is no rule about geographical regions like curling, the IIHF attempted something like that from 1998 to 2004 with a far east qualifier for the mens world championship, and then dropped it. Not aware of them ever doing that with the olympics18abruce (talk) 16:52, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

date of qualification[edit]

For the women's tournament it is very easy to determine the actual date that a nation has secured a spot, it is done regularly on the soccer pages, just don't know if it adds anything here or if it belongs at all.18abruce (talk) 16:43, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

explanation of Finland clinching[edit]

According to the iihf 2012 program, the women have adopted the new format for that tournament. So USA, Canada, Finland, and Russia can all finish no lower than 6th. A sixth place finish for Finland will give them 2720 total points, which neither Slovakia (maximum 2700) nor Germany (maximum 2610), can overtake.18abruce (talk) 16:04, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is no need for Slovakia or Germany to be better. Finland can be 6th after USA, Canada, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland, so it is not yet qualified. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.47.79.234 (talk) 20:47, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Russia is qualified as host, so they don't count, my bad... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.47.79.234 (talk) 20:49, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
