Jimmy Pattison: 85,400 hits. Jim Pattison: 369,000 hits. Likewise, I've read "Jim Pattison" more often than "Jimmy Pattison". Shawnc 15:11, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The claim that Jimmy Pattison chaired the Expo '86 committee for no compensation isn't exactly true -- he was paid a pauper's salary of $1 a month. Pattison hasn't cashed the $1 cheques (why would he need to?!) -- he has had each one mounted and framed and they are hanging on his office wall in Vancouver. I'd add that to the article, but I can't find any references online. --216.13.216.218 19:46, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 11 October 2019[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Page move decision stayed by proposer, without prejudice ~~~~

(non-admin closure)

In April 2006 a cut-and-paste page move was done, which didn't transfer this talk page's commentary. There had been discussion proposed by a user earlier that year to move to Jim Pattison, so likely is support. However, I'd like to (a) have a more fulsome conversation to determine that's desirable and consistent with WP:CommonName and (b) determine whether Jimmy Pattison should redirect to Jim Pattison or redirect to the James Pattison dab page as I have more time. At the same time, I'd like to eventually get consensus on how best to transfer this talk page. Doug Mehus (talk) 20:45, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy PattisonJim Pattison – This page was moved in 2006 in a cut-and-paste move to Jim Pattison, which broke the Talk page and edit summaries. Have notified User:Bradv. I personally think this disambiguation page was useful, there seems to be a lack of clarity in what is WP:Primary--a deceased American baseball player or a living Canadian businessman? Thought I'd propose a legitimate page move request to establish consensus. --Doug Mehus (talk) 15:23, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Procedural comment Please vote using either redirect to and the target page (either Jim Pattison or Jimmy Pattison (baseball)), with your rationale, with special consideration to WP:Primary, or disambiguate to keep this page as is. Votes in Support will be treated as a move of this page back to Jim Pattison (may be somewhat technical for the move closer, which should be an administrator). Votes Keep will be treated as to retain this disambiguation page, possibly with migrating this Talk page's relevant pre-2007 comments to Jim Pattison. If disambiguating wins the day, and only one dab page is allowed, then it's a matter of deciding whether James Pattison or Jimmy Pattison survives. Still, Jimmy Pattison will need to redirect somewhere, to the surviving dab page or to either of the two proposed target pages. Thanks. Votes move to and the target page (either of the aforementioned) will be treated as indicated. Doug Mehus (talk) 16:06, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: it is difficult to see exactly what happened, but apparently a cut'n'paste move to Jim Pattison took place (2006-04-07); then that version was deleted (2006-12-12) for copyright violations; then a brand new (I assume) article was written (2006-12-22). Maybe that isn't e whole story, but if it is then the only changes that need to be made might be removal of those same copyright violations from the ancient history of this article. I'm not sure how necessary that is, although there is (was) very close paraphrasing of copyrighted text on various websites that may have been more blatant 13 years ago. On the primary topic question, there is no lack of clarity. Relevant to the question of dab pages, see James Pattison. Lithopsian (talk) 15:51, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lithopsian, it's a good theory. I only looked at the April 2006 cut-and-paste version. I updated several backlinks for Jimmy Pattison to Jim Pattison as they were redirecting to Jimmy Pattison (baseball). As well, in Canada, Jim Pattison is arguably more well known by Jimmy Pattison. In fact, pundits and even the mass media refer to him by that nickname. So, there's merit to the move. Nonetheless, I do not think this page should be a redirect to Jimmy Pattison (baseball). Doug Mehus (talk) 16:02, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You've lost me. When did this page ever redirect to Jimmy Pattison (baseball)? Who ever suggested it should? It has been a redirect to Jim Pattison (Canadian billionaire) for the past 13 years. I reverted your edits so that it would still be a redirect to the Canadian because he is by far and away the primary topic under this title or anything similar. The only links you fixed were ones you broke by changing this page from a redirect to a dab page. Now you want to move this page (a redirect or dab page, you haven't said which) over the article about the Canadian magnate whilst claiming he is better known as Jimmy. Have you got something backwards? Do you in fact want to move Jim Pattison to Jimmy Pattison? It is worth noting the, very brief, discussion of the reasons for picking Jim as the title back in 2006, above on this very talk page. Lithopsian (talk) 18:43, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lithopsian, It did before I made it a disambiguation page. It should either redirect to Jim Pattison or to the James Pattison dab page unless the consensus is to move it to Jim Pattison. Doug Mehus (talk) 18:46, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lithopsian, Nevermind, you're correct. It did redirect to Jim Pattison. I was getting my Jimmy Pattison and Jimmy Pattison (baseball) confused. I'm fine with it redirecting to Jim Pattison, but I think we should have a fulsome conversation to see whether Jim or Jimmy is the WP:CommonName. Would the proper process be, then, to propose to move Jim Pattison to Jimmy Pattison? I personally favour Jim Pattison, but my main concern is that the above talk page discussion from 2006 needs to be with the Jim Pattison talk page. Doug Mehus (talk) 18:50, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you can propose a move from Jim Pattison to Jimmy Pattison. Best to withdraw this proposal first or there is likely to be all kinds of confusion. Might also want to go back to the starting position for this article, as a redirect, again to avoid confusion that you might be trying to overwrite a dab page. Lithopsian (talk) 20:02, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lithopsian, Okay, sounds good. Should we just wait a week for this to show up on a closure report and then I can start anew? Doug Mehus (talk) 20:11, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Up to you. Leaving it open risks other people weighing in and muddying the waters. Closing isn't hard and you're allowed to do it yourself. Just wrap the discussion with the {{RM top}} and {{RM bottom}} templates (substitute them, you'll see when it looks right), use {{RMnac}} to indicate a non-admin closure, and remove the {{requested move}} template. I can't do it, only the proposer can withdraw the request early. Lithopsian (talk) 20:38, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
