In New York City, he has designed for The Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York Shakespeare Festival, Broadway theatre, and off-Broadway productions.

He has designed for other U.S. opera companies, including the San Francisco Opera; the Chicago Lyric Opera; Glimmerglass Opera; Opera Theatre of St. Louis; Santa Fe Opera; Seattle Opera; and the opera companies of Houston, Dallas, San Diego, Washington, and Boston.

In Europe: the English National Opera; the Royal Swedish Opera; the Opéra Bastille, Paris; the Bavarian State Opera, Munich; De Nederlandse Opera, Amsterdam; and Teatro Comunale di Bologna.

Regional theatres include the American Repertory Theatre, Cambridge, MA; the Goodman Theatre, Chicago; the Long Wharf Theatre, New Haven; Hartford Stage; Arena Stage, Washington D.C.; the Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis; Center Stage, Baltimore; and the Actors Theatre of Louisville.
