Hi Derekbridges,
The template doesn't allow to change the ships name from "Almirante Cochrane" to "Cochrane" (just to list all "Cochrane"s). Moreover, as I understand the template, it is a overload for the wikipedia server 1) to read the template, 2)convert to simple wikilink and 3)then to render as html code. The simple wikilink reduces the last to 2 steps. According to the template page, the {{ship}} is a typing short cut for linking to ship articles.
