Marcel MüllerMarcel Mueller — When he played in Germany he spelled it Müller, but now that he's in North America he is spelling it the English way of Mueller. His jersey says Mueller, all of the North Amercian Stats websites are spelling it Mueller even his team (Maple Leafs). Here's a list of websites spelling it Mueller.[1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[6],[7] and many more. Even if you google Marcel Müller (link here [8]) You get all results of Marcel Mueller and you do get a Marcel Müller but its some freelance grapher (IE not the same person. I say we should move it to Marcel Mueller. Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 08:34, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For Muller[edit]

If this were purely an NHL player bio, then I'd say Mueller, but it aint. At the Marlies roster, we merely pipelink Muller as Mueller. GoodDay (talk) 22:56, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't take into account how the player himself is spelling it. He is spelling it Mueller. He Muller with the accent is pronounced the same way has Mueller. He has decided to use the Mueller. He has no obligation to change the spelling as many players haven't. Robert Müller did not use Mueller for the NHL draft. Remember that Marcel is under no pressure to spell it Mueller. It was his choice.--Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 23:14, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This likely has nothing to do with choice but more to do with bureaucracy and how the U with the umlaut is translated into Canadian English. I say the page title and article should read Muller and that it should just be noted "also spelled Meuller" or something to that extent in the article. Personally, I think something like this falls under the same precedent as other european names.--Львівське (talk) 16:41, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Robert Müller didn't change his spelling. There's a load of people that change there spelling. Ferdinand von Mueller Is the one that pops to mind. You have the German wikipedia spelling it Mueller and the French one spelling it Müller. I think the only thing we should do is spell it the english way (this is a english encyclopaedia) unless this individual has chosen to keep the spelling in english. Robert Müller chose to keep the spelling, but Marcel did not. Oh yea, there's no pressure on the player to change the spelling. If that was the case how do you explain Robert deciding to keep the spelling. --Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 04:30, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like your own assumptions. —KRM (Communicate!) 21:10, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What makes you think a player doesn't have a choice on how his name is spelled? Please tell me? I would really like to know this so called belief that he is forced to spell his own name different. That seems like an assumption to me.--Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 02:28, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since every single European player gets his name changed in the NHL. —KRM (Communicate!) 21:35, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How so? Accents don't count. Seriously who are these players. We aren't talking about taking off accents. --Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 08:17, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The best argument (correction only) against the move here is he was forced to do it. Please cite the your source that he was forced to do it. Wikipedia only gets info from sources Wikipedia:No_original_research. --Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 20:51, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know how he signs his name? It has nothing to do with him being "forced", it's assigned. Look at Ozolinsh or Zholtok, that's not how they spelled their names, but when they came to the NHL their names were converted through Customs/immigration or whoever and turned from Russian into English following whatever national guide. Hell, look at Graobovski, they spell his name differently on the Belarusian team, in English as well! Again, I stress, this isn't about him "being forced to change his name" as you are presenting it, but how it's assigned. I doubt he gives a shit how they spelled his name on a jersey or entered him on a roster sheet. It's not like they changed his name officially--Львівське (talk) 03:20, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Where is Grabovski's article located? Is it at Hraboúski? Nope. Giving that example just made your point even weaker. Grabovski's article isn't at Hraboúski as it shouldn't be. That's a very good point for me not you. Thanks. Also, look at the sources. Wikipedia 'goes by the sources and the majority are spelling the Mueller. I do know the NFL as rules in place that say you jersey name has to be your legal name in the US. I'm pretty sure that that's how the NHL will follow too or Canada if it's a Canadian team. This is also why Chad Johnson wasn't allowed to wear Chad Ochocinco until it was legally changed. I'm continuing to point up that all you are saying is Original Research which wikipedia as a strict policy against. --Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 03:53, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For Mueller[edit]

I'm for Mueller as that's what he is using at the moment.--Everyone Dies In the End (talk) 22:43, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Very well, if that's what he wishes to be called. GoodDay (talk) 15:00, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

At WP:HOCKEY, we've compromised to keep the foregin stuff in the player bios, as they're not NHL bios. Muller's name is shown (or should be) as Mueller in the Marlies template roster. GoodDay (talk) 23:05, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

TBH, I'm not certain how this player's bio falls under WP:HOCKEY's diacritics compromise. GoodDay (talk) 16:48, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
