Title[edit]

From where does the Des Barres title of marquis originate? If it's a British title, shouldn't the title be Marquess rather than Marquis? LordVetinari (talk) 04:42, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I didn't find that it is a title in the peerage of Britain. It may be some sort of old French title. I'm no expert in noble titles, so I am not making any changes to the article. However, I suspect that the title is entirely historic (for example, List of marquisates in France notes an old marquisate of la Barre). Maybe this family traces its ancestry back to that line, or some other old title. Or maybe it is just an affectation. Someone will need to do some more research. Considering that 1) there is no extant nobility in France and 2) the links to sources to document it are dead, shouldn't MDB's designation as "the 26th Marquis Des Barres" be eliminated from the article, or at least moved to a less prominent position, perhaps with some sort of qualifier such as "claimed"? It certainly does not belong right after his name as it is not part of why he is a notable personage. CasparRH (talk) 16:55, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
