Publication[edit]

The isfdb says the first book publication was

"(1958, Galaxy Publishing Corp., 33, $0.35, 191pp, pb) Cover: Wallace A. Wood"

but my 1978 paperback says "Copyright 1954 by Doubleday and Company". Is Galaxy an imprint of Doubleday? Did it sit on the shelf for four years? —wwoods 20:29, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've come to realize that the ISFDB biblios are woefully incomplete. They'll almost always do more to confuse you than anything else. -- Antepenultimate 02:25, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The 1954 edition is now listed. 129.42.208.186 (talk) 15:19, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And of course, like Wikipedia, the rule of "so fix it" applies. Anyone can submit a publication to the ISFDB for inclusion. 129.42.208.186 (talk) 20:06, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

love the characterization[edit]

Clement has a particular style of characterization where his aliens are resourceful and plucky and likeable (Needle, MoG, Iceworld). There is nothing saying that the emotions of aliens can not be recognizeable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.255.12.16 (talk) 16:21, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a longer version?[edit]

I seem to recall reading some years ago - unfortunately I don't recall where - that "Mission of Gravity" was originally longer, and that editors had cut out various passages before its first publication, and that almost all published versions of the novel since then included only this cut text; then, relatively recently and for the first time, the complete, uncut text had been published. I have never seen this edition, so can't verify it.

Does anyone know if this is true? If so, and they can give definite information about editions, years, and so on, it might be worth mentioning in this article. (And I would be interested to find out too, and to buy the complete edition.) M.J.E. (talk) 16:04, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That does not appear to be true of the 2000 NESFA press edition (and they make a point of "original versions"), the 2003 Orb edition, or the 205 Gollancz / Orion "SF Masterworks" edition, nor any edition listed at the ISFDB, nor in the Locus index. I would expect such an edition to advertise the restored text loudly, but none seems to do so. 129.42.208.186 (talk) 20:04, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
