Backwards note[edit]

I removed the short comment on the "backwards" rotation because it did not really accurately explain the galaxy's rotation. The discussion deserves a paragraph. Also, it would be nicer to have references to journal articles for these articles. Dr. Submillimeter 17:57, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can't say I am a proponent of the expression, but it has been coined and is used even by professionals like yourself, if you care to check rather than remove - an attitude I find utterly patronizing. The spiral galaxy article has a lot on formation of spiral arms and I would have preferred an addition there or here rather than withholding this interesting fact. The sv:wiki has opened up a new article Backwards spiral galaxy, which is another option. :/ Kurtan 09:05, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The expression is not necessarily in use by "professionals" but is instead in use by the press office for the Hubble Space Telescope. Professionals would describe this galaxy as having "leading spiral arms". "Backwards spiral galaxy" is not a term used by professional astronomers.
Anyhow, maybe I can find an article on this and add the information back using real terminology instead of press-release terminology. Dr. Submillimeter 09:31, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added a new section describing the spiral arms without using press-release neologisms. This should be satisfactory to everyone. Dr. Submillimeter 10:18, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Distance[edit]

I am missing a citation for the 111ly distance given in the text as well as in the info box. If I calculate just with the Hubble constant from the redshift velocity, I get something around 200ly, so I am wondering where the number cited here comes from - are there additional property measurements for distance calculation? Can anyone clarify that and add citations? -Vluger (talk) 23:17, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As nobody seems to be able to give a citation for the previous value, I changed the value to 200 mio lys wich is also what the cited databas entry says. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vluger (talkcontribs) 07:06, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
