Cost increases since 1946

[edit]

"Diesel fuel now costs about USD 3 per US gallon: a 3,750% increase since 1946, and coal US$70 per short ton ($77/t) (at the time of writing): a 1,555% increase since 1946."

How do you explain the cost of crew wages for 2 men, $66,000 in 1946 ? Thats crazy. Has someone tried to adjust that figure for inflation ?Eregli bob (talk) 19:12, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Firebox Wrappers

[edit]

I feel like this term and the line "failure of the highly-expensive firebox-wrapper metallurgy to withstand the conditions of actual operation" needs to be more fully explained.

Specifically; was this design different to other locomotives, or simply poor execution of an existing design? If it was expensive, why go for this rather than cheaper, proven firebox designs? (e.g. what benefits was it supposed to provide?)86.158.125.141 (talk) 01:11, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

NYC last steam locomotive

[edit]

Niagara S2 #5500, built in 1946, was NOT the railroad’s “last steam locomotive”. This was the 1948 ALCo-built Class A 2-8-4 Berkshires, first assigned to the P&LE. Please correct the test by adding one word: #5500 was the last NIAGARA steam locomotive. 2600:1004:B16E:B2FF:EC57:D962:792A:9B0D (talk) 23:05, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
