Pl note that original metre gauge line was operated and owned by GIP Railway. When Bengal Nagpur Railway, private company was formed it was given permission to run and build line up to Nagpur to Howrah on broad gauge basis. So the metre gauge line of GIP which was run under name & style of Nagpur Chhatisgarh Railway was given to BNR. BNR came in to existence in 1887 and started operating from 1888 and was not taken over by British Government of India till 1944.!! Jethwarp (talk) 14:42, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Jethwarp: I'm not going to make a big deal about this but the GIP did not own or operate the Chhattisgarh line. Ownership: please see http://dsal.uchicago.edu/digbooks/digpager.html?BOOKID=Statistics_1876&object=177. This was a provincially owned line. The GIP did not have any metre gauge locomotives to operate it (see the Hughes books). This is why I felt the need to correct the text - I don't make a habit of it as it is very boring. I also have no patience with the formalities of the medium as you might tell. As to the BNR it was owned by the government and operated by a company (like the British railways currently): see, for instance, http://dsal.uchicago.edu/digbooks/digpager.html?BOOKID=Statistics_1910&object=148. What happened in '44 was that the Government took over direct operation. Incidentally these are contemporary sources not second hand information, you can see the same stuff in the Railway Board reports - some of them are in oudl.osmania.ac.in.
