Early proposal for Pound Sterling[edit]

"An early proposal for decimalizing the pound in the 19th century envisaged a system of 1 Pound = 10 florins = 100 dimes = 1000 cents."

This (unsourced) sentence may be correct, but logic invites me to question why a division of 1/1000 would be refered to as a "cent". Surely "mil" would have been used, as it was in other currencies with such a division (e.g. the Palestine pound)? Dainamo (talk) 09:25, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the florin was the base unit, in which case it might best be shown as: "10 Pounds = 1 florin = 10 dimes = 100 cents". But, as you mentioned, it is unsourced, so this is just speculation. AdventurousSquirrel (talk) 03:19, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have a source for the actual text of this quote - it differs significantly (as expected here). It is a summary of the dialogue in the House of Commons that took place n 27 April 1847 between decimal currency proposers Dr Bowring, Mr Hume and the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The proposal was not significantly different from the monetary system that was eventually adopted 124 years later in 1971, although the initially suggested names for the two new units were Queens (for 1/10 pound, to become the florin, and 10p) and Victorias (a coin in their words "to the value of two and two-fifths of a penny", i.e. 1/100 pound, eventually 1p). The compromise agreed on the floor of the House was that coins would be minted to the value of 1/10 of a pound only, and no further legislation would be pursued at that time, the Chancellor noting that the nation liked its current currency and accounting techniques. I'll drop a precis of this in the article soon if I have the time, otherwise, please go ahead folks.
