Switzerland, which at that time was undergoing a severe economic crisis, forcing many of its citizens should seek better opportunities abroad, for which America represented a chance for prosperity and progress.

In the case of Uruguay, in particular, offered a range of alternatives to immigrants, not only for its stability and hegemony, but also because large estates available and the proof is the afincamiento of the first homes on the west coast, the departments of Colonia and Soriano, for the agricultural and livestock productivity.

The city, though located in Uruguay, shares a number of features and similarities with Europe, mainly Switzerland, Germany and France, as a result of its close link with the cultural and social monopoly of those countries.

The party of the first of August, held in the Swiss cantons, is even more notorious and extravagant in New Helvetia. Also, around the anniversary commemoration of the Swiss Confederation extends even up to a period of thirty days beginning with the traditional call of the Catholic and evangelical, and culminating with a family-style lunch, which brings together departmental authorities and national.

On the other hand, an important aspect of architecture neohelvética is that, unlike what happens in other cities in Uruguay, in this conurbation is possible to appreciate a heraldic design in nature, where every building bears a symbolic shield reference different Swiss cantons where the first settlers of the metropolis.

No less important is the fact that in New Helvetia dominated by a different cuisine, more rooted in that of central Europe, which include a wide variety of cheeses, milk and its derivatives.

The famous cheese colony, and the semi and dambo, was introduced in 1868 by Theophilus John Karlen, of Swiss origin, and with his family in the city would be established to start a new culture and a cooking style to that then quite foreign to the knowledge of the local population.

The Swiss heritage

To summarize, the Swiss heritage in Uruguay is deeper than it seems. Not surprisingly, the country was known to mid-twentieth century as the Switzerland of Latin America, not only by geographical proportion of this area makes a perfect counterpart of that European nation, but because somehow, the arrival of Swiss in general, and Italian, French and Germans, in particular, represented a significant event in the subsequent political organization of a country that was receptive to foreign influences.

Currently you can see that, despite the passage of time, New Helvetia is still related to the customs of their ancestors and still maintains a strong social and cultural bond that the difference well the rest of Uruguay, more familiar with the Spanish and Italian.

Uruguay has the best quality of life in Latin America and within the area of the country where New Helvetia is considered the best (almost no crime)

The people of this city have remained to this day the customs and traditions inherited. There are several groups who are still practicing songs and dances of their ancestors.
