Is it safe to grow them on Sosnowsky's hogweed stalks?[edit]

Heracleum sosnowskyi is very poisonous. Can it be used as a substratum or one will get poisonous mushrooms that way? Any sources, articles etc?81.195.31.118 (talk) 00:43, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can see in the Heracleum sosnowskyi article, its toxicity if from furanocoumarins, which are only toxic in conjunction with UV light. Furanocoumarins are also relatively volatile/not extremely stable, so I'd guess that dried stalks contain very little. I would therefore not worry about getting poisonous mushrooms, but on the other hand the furanocoumarin article says many are fungicide. There might be enough left in your dried stalks for the mushroom to not grow, but you'd have to try... 98.151.72.221 (talk) 20:40, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
