Merge[edit]

As with RDS Arena (which is the stadium), RDS Showgrounds, and RDS Simmonscourt, there is no real value in having what amounts to one part of the RDS grounds covered under it's own article. The history, use and operation of the "stadium" are bound up in the RDS grounds as a whole. See similar discussion on Talk:Royal Dublin Society in relation to separate "simmonscourt" merge consensus. This content should similarly be merged to the main RDS article, and this title redirected. If no objections or alternative suggestions will do this tomorrow. I don't feel that merging the articles will do any good. The RDS, meaning the stadium, is the homeground of leinster rugby while the society itself has nothing to do with them. This article should be kept as it is as its reputation as a rugby and soccer ground surely warrants it. anon, 16:40 (GMT), 21 May 2008. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.70.243.31 (talk)

Were it a permanent venue for soccer, or the permanent home of Leinster I would agree. But it's not. Leinster are only using it during the redevelopment at Donnybrook Rugby Ground. As soon as that development is completed, the stated "reason" above for having an independent article on the RDS Arena ceases to be valid. So, as a short term home only, as stated, the content should be merged. Otherwise it's just a one liner article. "The RDS Arena is a stadium in the RDS ground in Ballsbridge. It is the temporary home of Leinster Rugby, and hosted the 2007 FAI Ford Cup final." All the rest of its history, layout, management, facilities, etc, etc are tied up with the RDS proper. And so the article has no independent value. Any other thoughts? Guliolopez (talk) 15:56, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The capacity of the rds is and probably will always be larger than that of donnybrook. If Leinster wished to entirely abandon the rds then it would seem strange for a permanent roof to be built over the 'Grandstand'. The rds arena will always have a major function in irish sport, be it for rugby, soccer or showjumping. People looking for information on the rds arena will look for a separate article and a clear one, outlining information purely on the sports ground will help people not from the Dublin area understand it as a venue. Also, could I turn your attention to the article; Derry City F.C.. It speaks of their homeground- 'The Brandywell' in detail while also offering a separate article describing it in more detail. This is a mere example as articles with similar 'spin off' pages exist throughout wikipedia. It mat be of benefit to do something similar with the Royal Dublin Society. Again, however i do feel that the article should be headed 'RDS Arena' rather than RDS (stadium). anon, 21:01 (GMT), 22 May 2008.
To address your points:
  1. "The capacity of the rds is and probably will always be larger than that of donnybrook. If Leinster wished to entirely abandon the rds then it would seem strange for a permanent roof to be built over the 'Grandstand'." This is total speculation. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Please read WP:FUTURE. If what you say DOES come to pass, and the RDS arena becomes the PERMANENT ground for Leinster or some other club, then - certainly - a separate article may be warranted. Until then however the Arena remains a subset of the RDS grounds, with no major distinctive attributes that give it notability in its own right.
  2. "Also, could I turn your attention to the article; Derry City F.C. It speaks of their homeground- 'The Brandywell' in detail while also offering a separate article describing it in more detail. " Yes. Fine. Where a DISTINCT and UNIQUE sports ground exists, with it's own separate history, management, etc, then a specific article may be warranted. The Brandywell and the RDS Arena are not comparable however - for two reasons. (1) It is the PERMANENT home of Derry City. And (2) The Brandywell article covers the ENTIRE ground. As the existing RDS article already does. If anything, your assertion proves my point about not "carving the playing pitch out separately from the other RDS fields".
  3. Again, I would draw your attention to the previous discussion on this matter here where a consensus was agreed on merging the "sub-sets" of the RDS grounds (RDS Arena, Simmonscourt, conference/exhibition halls, etc) were to into the main article.
Also -Please stop unilaterally removing the merge tag until a broader consensus is agreed. I will attempt to broaden the audience to achieve this. In the meantime, it may be more appropriate for you to apply citations and sources for the content you have added, so that, whether it is retained as a separate article, or merged to the main, that it is compliant with WP:VER. OK. Per input from other neutral users here, there is a (renewed) consensus to cover the "RDS Stadium" in the same context as the other venues within the RDS complex. I will be merging and redirecting shortly. Guliolopez (talk) 15:38, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
