Commencing review[edit]

I will review this article over coming days hopefully. My initial thoughts:

The article reads well and is interesting.
It appears neutral in tone and is not the subject of any edit wars.
The referencing looks sound and is very well tied to the individual facts cited - a refreshing change from some pages!
As a non-expert, it seems to adequately cover all major aspects of the subject.
If a photo of the man is not available, is there any chance of a photo of a sarangi (not the photo at the Sarangi page, as it is being played by another person who is not the subject of this article)?
Split the section "Career" into his career; and a separate section on his impact and legacy (which would mostly comprise the second para of the current career material).
Make the paras a little shorter under "career" and "impact and legacy" - about 2-3 paras on each, instead of one.
Are there any good quotes of Narayan's views about music that could be drawn from the book to which he contributed? They could be added, perhaps as a pullout quote, to the article. Just one or two, and not too long.
Can a chronological list of his main recordings be provided at the end of the text?
Is it possible to explain how Narayan "changed the build" of the instrument in ways that a lay reader would understand?
Are there any particularly notable films for which he provided music? These can be noted in the career section.

Comment Thank you and sorry for the sudden insertion of new material. I split the article up, added film names and removed Allmusic references - the stuff is not as reliable as books on the subject. I have asked for the permission to use a picture of Narayan from a person on flickr, but haven't gotten a positive reponse yet; I like the sarangi close-up though (the guy playing the sarangi is supposed to be Narayan's disciple, which might well be true, but I can't verify it). I haven't really come across a one-sentence statement by Narayan on his music, but perhaps I overlooked one and will come across it again some time. I have a discography from 1950 to 1984 from a reliable source, and then the releases from Allmusic. That would be pretty thrown together though and most of these are hardly available anymore, so it makes sense to not include them, or not? Hekerui (talk) 19:02, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your excellent work. This continues to be a beautifully crafted article, and very closely referenced. Regarding the list of recordings: their contemporary availability is not a relevant consideration. As long as the sources for a discography are sound, i would go ahead and create the list. Place it in this article, and if becomes too long or detailed, it can become an article in its own right in due course. For an example of this see Choral symphony - which I am currently reviewing for GA. You will see that here, User:Jonyungk has taken the chronological list of choral symphonies out of the article and created a separate article containing the list: List of choral symphonies. But this should only be done if the list becomes relatively long compared to the main article itself. Ideally the discography would list the name of the recording, the year of release and if possible the label under which it was released, if available. Nothwithstanding the desirability of the discography, I am going to go ahead and pass this at GA level. It is a very tidy piece of work.
