nationality[edit]

Surely, it is misleading to describe this man as Canadian. He was not born in Canada, and did as much of his important work in the UK as in Canada. By the time Newfoundland joined confederation he had retired to the UK. He could only really be said to be Canadian due to the coincidence of Newfoundland joining confederation during his lifetime (although not while he was a resident of Newfoundland or Canada). He was as much, if not more so, a citizen of the UK, although perhaps most accurately he could be said to be a British subject and citizen of the Commonwealth. I will amend this page to the more accurate and less value-laden term "Newfoundland-born" instead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.15.164.110 (talk) 00:13, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
