Neutrality[edit]

Article title[edit]

The title of an article should be the most common name by which the subject is referred to in reliable sources. I'm sure that this isn't "J.O.(Seán) Scanlan", but I can't work out what it is. From Scanlan's achievements confirmed by the source that I added I would expect to be able to find loads of sources under some name, but can't find many under the ones that I tried: "Seán Scanlan", "J. O. Scanlan", "John Scanlan" and "John O. Scanlan". Is there another form of the name that is more commonly used? Phil Bridger (talk) 13:02, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it's harder than one would imagine to find lots of links to him from a straight search, but (1) I think I know why the name is not consistent and (2) I found lots of links if you include "IEE" or "IEEE" in front or after his name - these refer to the (U.K.'s) Institution of Electrical Engineers and the (U.S.'s) Institution of Electronic and Electrical Engineers, and it will link to their publications & references to same much faster. Re (1), I think he may have used the Irish and English form of his Christian name at different times. I think he used "J Scanlan" and "J O Scanlan" earlier in his career, and "S O Scanlan" (and maybe "S Scanlan") Try a search for "IEE Seán O Scanlan" and get 516,000 results, Try a search for "IEEE Seán O Scanlan" and get 5,330 results, etc..
