Barony of Castle Douglas[edit]

Isn't there also a feudal barony of this name? Is it in any way connected? Cagney & Stacey (talk) 07:39, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I presume the feudal barony would relate to that of the Lords and Earls of Douglas. It was based in Lanarkshire, where there is a town of Douglas. Sir William Douglas of Castle Douglas was not related to the House of Douglas.

However, Sir William Douglas did have the town of Castle Douglas made a 'burgh of barony' in 1791. Sir William had no direct descendants (he died unmarried) but his niece Elizabeth (daughter of William's brother Robert Douglas(1760-1824)) married Sir Robert Abercromby of Birkenbolg, Aberdeenshire and their descendants / the Abercromby Estate remained as 'feudal superiors' of castle Douglas until the Abolition of Feudal Tenure Etc. (Scotland) Act 2000 abolished all the remaining aspects of the feudal system as of 28th November 2004.Alistairliv (talk) 15:03, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Obelisk[edit]

Is this reference to an obelisk a mistake? Should it refer to his mausoleum? Or is there a separate memorial? Shipsview (talk) 09:34, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
