Personal historical connection[edit]
I finished my study at Caltech in 1955 although I did not officially get my PhD until 1956. For several years I roomed with David Wittry. Dave was a graduate student working with Pol Duwez. He later became a professor at USC.
I remember him telling me that he was working on splat cooling. He was squirting molten metal onto spinning wheels cooled with liquid nitrogen. It is difficult for me to believe that it took until 1960 to get amorphous metal. For a year or two, I barely kept in touch with him. but by 1960 I was seeeing or talking to him less than once a year.
